From my own personal experience, the cheapest airfare prices are always at www.southwest.com if you are traveling within the US. For international tickets, www.kayak.com is usually the cheapest since they are a clearinghouse for many major airlines and get better rates than even some of the other websites such as Expedia or Orbitz.com. Good luck!

I'm not sure if airlines invented yield management or not, but they do it better than anyone. Truth is, there is no best place, it's all about timing. If you are ready to buy now, check all the 3rd party sites, travelocity, priceline, hotwire, orbitz, expedia, cheaptickets... i know, i know (time consuming-and I've probably forgotten at least one). If you are going somewhere that jetblue or southwest flies, also check their websites. Find what you like the best, and if you can live with the price, book it and don't be upset if something lower comes out later (don't even check 'cause your tickets will be nonrefundable, nonchangeable anyway). If you don't care what times you fly, take the lowest price you got, knock off about 25% and try that price on "name your own price" on priceline. If your days are flexible, pick Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday flights in both directions and make sure you have a Saturday night stay at your destination (i.e you can't pick Tuesday rtn Saturday but you can pick Saturday rtn Tuesday). If you're not ready to pay now, don't even check because nothing you see will necessarily be valid for when you are ready to book (although it will give you a good idea of what the price range might be). Don't wait if you're flying a very popular route or during a holiday or busy season.

I have found the best deals by going directly to the airline's website you want to travel on. Usually there is a section called something like web specials that offers cheaper tickets that can be purchased through their website.

I usually use travelocity.com to find out the cheapest in general. Then when I find the best flight for the money, I go to that airline's site.

If I'm doing special stuff, specifically one-way international from the US, I often check out www.adventure-travel-inc.com.

I travel a lot internationally... I always check for the best prices on all these sites before making a decision:

www.cheaptickets.com
www.cheapfares.com
www.orbitz.com
www.travelocity.com

Hope this helps you,

John
