Coming from a Polish household, and growing up eating them, it is to my knowledge they are meant to be served as a main dish. Even when I fly over to Europe visit family and friends, they're always served alone.

They're most excellent with light sour cream, and occasionally a bit of caramelized onions on top...another good one to try is fruit pirogies sprinkled with sugar. Yummy!

I have them as a main dish, quite filling actually, but if you were to serve them as a side dish, reduce the amount, I am sure not too many people will complain, if any.

It depends on where you put them on the plate. In the middle of the plate: main dish. On the side of the plate: side dish.

No, seriously, you can make pirogies as the main dish or as a side dish.

Oh gods your making me hungry. Have not had any in ages. A main dish as I stuff myself so much with them could only eat some cabbage rolls with them. YUM

I've always used them as a main dish. My 6 year old son's favorite meal is fried perogies with sour cream, cheese and bacon with fried shrimp and a veggie! (broccoli or salad)
