No one knows why. It just a cockney slang. Examples of these slangs are:
Adam and Eve = believe ('would you adam and eve it?')
Dickie Bird = word
Jacob's (Crackers) = knackers (testicles)
Moby Dick = sick

I believe it dates back to the time when men would wear a "fob" watch on a chain and keep it in a waistcoat pocket.
kettle on the hob= fob
