Ive been looking after a neighbours westie recently and it seems to always be ill and have an upset stomach. I dont know what my neighbour is feeding her but I know she has quite a few treats from him but these arent dog treats, stuff like crisps and chicken. Is this the reason she is always ill? The vet doesnt have a clear idea. She also seems to be biting her legs etc..is this something to do with her being ill? We know its not fleas too. Any help would be appreciated

Its an allergy, My dog has the same thing. Its the kind of food. I feed my dog the blandest food I can find. If I switch his food it pees out his butt and his fur falls out all around his rump and legs, my vet suggested duck and potato dog food but its expensive, so I asked for an alternative and no joke he told me to go to wal mart and buy ol' roy, the plain stuff and it worked!! People foor should never be fed to dogs, especiaoly greasy stuff.

I have two Schipperkees and had a problem with the older one's stomach being upset. After a couple of visits to the vet, we found the problem was two fold.

First: We were feeding too many treats. We put her on a diet of chicken and rice with a half portion of her dog food. We now feed both dogs this diet. I make it myself and package it for freezing, taking only what I need for several days.

Simple recipe: 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
Long grain white rice

Boil chicken breasts in enough water to cover. Cook until done. Save water from the chicken and make rice. Use NO salt!!
Cut chicken in small cubes while rice cooks. Mix together and divide in to old cool whip containers and freeze.
Mix half rice and half dog food at feedings.

Second: We had her teeth cleaned. It seemed that when she ate, some of the tartar and bacteria was being ingested causing the bad stomach. We had had her teeth cleaned 3 years before, but 3 years in a dog's life is like 27 in ours. After the cleaning, we had a younger acting and healthier dog!

This may or may not be the problem, but it's worth a look. Good luck!

Certainly if the dog is eating foods that are too rich for their stomach is going to bother the stomach, and what upsets the stomach can certainly upset the rest of the body as well, and that includes the skin.

i think you'll find that when/if you get the dog on a regular/good diet, that the skin issues could quickly go away as well.

Westie seem to all have stomach and skin problems. I have been a vet tech for a oong time and have seen MANY,MANY Westies that have one of both problems. The dog would need to see another vet and probably have a lot of testing done to MAYBE find the cause.

The pup may be allergic to something which would upset the tummy and cause foot chewing as well as red ears etc. It's hard to say what might be ailing this poor pup.

It would probably be best just to give her dry food and make sure she has plenty of water to drink. Too much treats can make a dog sick..

TALK TO YOUR NEIGHBOR ABOUT IT.............. YOU DONT WANT ANYTHING TO HAPPEN TO THE DOG..YES THE CRISPS AND CHICKEN IS THE REASON SHE IS SICK
