my primary care doc told me that i should see a psychiatrist or a neurologist for my depression. i know why i am depressed, so it is not like i need to talk about it to figure out why. i just want to feel better. how do i go about finding one? my doctor told me to pick one from a list that he had. that's helpful!!!

my doc is basically saying that meds will help-which i wholeheartly agree, hence the psychiatrist. but why a neurologist?

i just want to feel better. i have a list of things that contribute to the way i feel, should i bring this with me?

A psychiatrist can perscribe you medication, which helps. And you understand that as well.

The neurologist because maybe it is not a chemical imbalance causing your depression or external factors either.

About the list, yes, bring it with you.

OK - you need to see a psychiatrist not a neurologist. I take medication for depression and I feel wonderful. You will too. I get my medication from my family doctor, but if he told you to go to a psychiatrist ask the nurses in the doc's office to recommend a psychiatrist from that list. If you are in high school or college you can go to the school psychologist. Good Luck.

A neurologist deals with nerves in brain as well and that might contribute to the development of depression. I have some weird emotions, up and down, sometimes weird voices/thought/smells, very strong emotions that psychiatrist thought it might be due to the abnormal function of my temporal lobe. So once it is dealing with a specific part of the brain, it deals with neurologist. Yes, you should bring along the list wtih you , anything may help.

even though you already know why your depressed, going to a counselor or phsyciatrist could help you talk through your feelings and maybe help you deal with them a little better. journaling alo helps get your feelings out too, which can make you feel better, the most important thing though, is that God loves you! if you dont have Jesus in your life, and would like more info about that, then you can feel free to ask me or maybe a local church somewhere. hope i helped.- kristn4christ

He probably just wants to rule out a medical condition causing your depression. I would do what he said and see both.
