A thyroid doctor is actually an endocrinologist. Endocrinology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the endocrime glands and its diseases (i.e goiter, diabetes, etc just to name a few). The other branches of internal medicine would include cardiology (heart), gastroenterology (G.I tract), nephrology (kidneys), etc. just to name a few. Actually, internists or a doctor who had training in internal medicine are also trained in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases. You can call them the jack of all trades. Before you become an endocrinologist, you will have to undergo training (residency) in internal medicine then subspecialize (fellowship) in endocorinology.
