assume you have a cleaning kit. if you do...use the very small rod designed for rifles. it will fit. you want to use a smaller jag or insert tip for your cleaning patches. Assume this is a break open single shot...if you needto you can insert several cleaning patches and pushe them thru from the breech to the muzzle..wipe it down with a little gun oil and a soft cloth....if a bolt action or any repeater u really need to get a rod with a insert tip designed to fit 410 or 45.
good luck

Ok everyone seems to have jumped on the safety bandwagon, without thinking of this particular situation. A 2.5" .410 shotgun shell can be fired in a 45/70 rifle. Your single shot rifle from the 1880 is most likely a 45/70. If it is not a 45/70 do not try it. The chamber is slightly loose, and the case will stretch slightly, however the slight looseness should not be enough to cause the firing pin to miss the primer, if it is put a wrap of electrical tape on the case. Don't go sticking washers or anything else in the chamber. It is possible that the case may split, and leak so gas out the breech, but I have never seen it, the case head can stretch enough to fill the chamber, and sometime they don't extract properly. With the rifling the shot pattern will be thrown into a donut pattern, and will not hit what you are aiming at, but will spray the shot in a ring around it. Shotshells in a rifled barrel are uselesss for anything besides vermin at up to about 15-20 ft. To the people below who said the shot would destroy the rifling this is absolutely not true. First off in the majority of modern shells, the shot will never even touch the barrel, as it is retained within the plastic shot cup. 2nd if it is an old shell that does not have a shot cup, the lead pellets will do no more wear than a lead bullet. There will be more lead residue, and the barrel will have to be cleaned sooner but that is all.

If you don't know how to clean it yourself, take it to a gun shop / gunsmith and ask for lessons.
Ask yourself this one simple question.
If I clean it and I DON'T know what I'm doing....will it work safely when I need it or want to use it?
