someone asked about why some christians say men having long hair is a sin. or women with short hair is a sin. most dont call it a sin however the Bible talks about it. read ! Co 11:5-20 or so. i mean if the pastor preaches out of the Bible and truth people leave the church and find another to fit there needs. or they hold a grudge. like about tv. some will preach against tv. our pastor does. however he does not say tv itself is wrong just some shows. but having a tv makes you tempted to watch those shows. so we should get rid of temptation. we lost a lot of people because they like tv. the Bible talks about we should not be of the world and seperate ourselves from the world and to be different.

we are here for God and to praise God and worship God not for ourselves if you are christian.

again i said most dont call it a sin. just like having a tv is not a sin. i did not say long hair is sin for men.

again were did i say anything about technology being a sin????????

i said some of the shows are wrong to watch but tv itself is not wrong. the same with internet and computers. surfing the net is ok however when you go to nude sites and porn sites and all. that is wrong.

that would be like if i was a pastor and said that anyone who has the movie finding nemo should not watch it anymore. most would get offended and wonder what is wrong with it. however most dont realize that the movie talks about evolution in it. then some will realize ok he has a point. others will be like well it wont hurt my kids any.

most churches changed there ways as well because so many were leaving. the thing with men and pants is in america and for a long time men wore pants. females just started to wear pants. our church if you are in a situation and need to wear pants for work or something it is ok. but at home you should were dress or skirts. and other countrys the men were both pants and shirts as well as robes. and the robes that the men wear are different material then that of the women. the mens are lighter in both color and material.

the Bible was just proven to be accurate with meaning. our church preaches on truth and the whole Bible. most churches use a verse were as we use the whole scripture. most of the time when our pastor brings stuff up like these it is with those who have been attending our church for a while now.

again i have not once said tv or any of that is sin. i said some shows are. if you disagree and are christian then i will pray for you. most of us grew up with smurfs? or some of us did. thinking it was a cute show. however honestly it is not. first there is black magic in it. second there is the papa smurf who acts like God. same with he man. that has so much violence in it as well as magic. on top of that it has he man who is the power of the universe. care bears has magic and uses bears to lead the way. all these shows they call on something other then God. this is for christians who believe in God. there are many more like this. even charmed. some enjoy watching but

we dont need to watch them. my life is so much greater now that i dont watch tv. again i am not saying tv is sin or wrong. however look how many of you are getting offended right now. or trying to justify things?

our purpose is to serve God not ourselves as christians.

and i dont have tv. because i know i would watch shows i dont need to. internet if was into porn i would get rid of it as well. i dont so i dont worry about it. video games i got rid of because even though there are some that are not bad first it was taking up to much time and i was not spending any with God and second i was tempted to play other games. so yes i did and do get rid of things that i am tempted of. that is like someone who is an alcoholic and keeping all different kinds of beer and alcohol in there house. i never said stuff was a sin. most people with tv can put a lock on it. however as i showed there are shows that will still be allowed for kids to watch that are not good but we think they are.

2007-01-15 06:33:37 · update #7

and i am not judging anyone. i can care less if you have a tv rather you believe it is wrong or not. there are things we need of this world. or are of use. like cars. food. what not. but there are things we dont need like tvs. we need our tongue and eyes and ears. and i am not saying all shows are wrong. for me i know i would watch what i dont need to. our pastor is not misleading. most churches out there are. i am thankfull to be more strict then not. for the Bible says there will be many who will fall short. i rather be safe. if i have a problem i ask. like internet if you know you will watch porn then maybe you should not have it. but if you know you wont because for me it is not that hard not to. then it is not wrong. but so many take it all to heart. and dont take the time to ask.

we took tv out especially when we realized how bad it was. my son watched he man and whenever something bad almost happens like a wreck he would say dont worry he man would have saved us. he would run around saying by the power of greyskull. and all that stuff. that got us thinking about all the shows we watched and realized we dont need them. now we spend time reading scritpture and spending family time instead of tv. we realized we used tv so we would not have to watch our kids as much. we would let them watch tv so we could do our own stuff.

i was someone when the pastor preached against it i thought it was not bad. tell God showed me.

it is hard for a person to let go of everything in the world. we are supposed to be different and apart, but the bible says remove ourselves from evil, and offensive things--if TV, hair, clothes or other items offend then the Christian is to remove themselves.

people are easy to offend. some things have to be told with a measure of tact when preached, believe me i know.

we are here for God and to praise God and worship God not for ourselves if you are christian. This sentence is true.

I think your heart is right, but you have been misguided. The book of Romans tells us: "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect". That doesn't mean that we are to completely separate ourselves from the world. If we were to get rid of everything that causes us to sin, we'd have to pluck out our eyes and our tongue (the deadliest weapon by the way).

I am a Christian girl and our family doesn't watch much t.v. but that isn't the point really. I think as Christians, in WHATEVER we do, whether it be the t.v. show we are watching, the music we are listeing to, the conversations we are having, the THOUGHTS we are having, we need to ask ourselves this:

(from Philipians) Is this true, is this honorable, is this right, is this pure, is this lovely, is this of good repute, is there any is excellence in this, is it worthy of praise? Those are the things we should be "dwelling" on. I ask myself those things often, and if the answer is "no", I make a change.

There are temptations all around us, and there will always be. We need to be in prayer and in the Word daily so our minds will be ever transformed to God's will, not our own. About the long hair, I am guessing you are talking about the scripture where a man shouldn't dress as a woman? Well, the long/short hair thing is pretty objective. I personally don't like long hair on a guy, but I do NOT think it is a sin. That's crazy. During biblical times, men had long hair, including Jesus I am sure. The only limits I read about in the Bible when it comes to personal grooming are that we are to be modest. That has nothing to do with our hair! Good grief!

There is nothing wrong with living like the Amish (I have great respect for them), but it IS wrong and IS sinful to judge others. It sounds like you are judging your brothers and sisters in Christ just because they aren't going gung-ho about getting rid of their t.v.'s. Don't let anyone twist the truth of scripture. I don't think people are ever offended by the truth - they are offended by ignorance. I hope this helped.

If TV is bad, then you are doing something far worse. Internet has TV beat by far. So maybe you should ask your pastor about being on the Internet. Get rid of TV because it tempts you, but get online???? There is more temptation online then there ever was on TV. lol But, I guess your pastor has to be specific? ;o)

I don't think anyone should point out how others should be when they're doing things that would be considered "bad" too. And it seems to me that your pastor thinks he needs to make all those types of decisions for his congregation.... yet, Jesus never did that. He pointed out what the person was doing wrong, not "oh, you shouldn't do that cause it might tempt you to do this....."

This is actually pretty funny. Grown people getting rid of their TV's because a pastor tells them to be separate from the world, but you didn't move to stay offline, did you? lol

The answer is simple many Christians and I include myself get filled up by the words ideals and views that we have no room in our spiritual bellies if you will to the hungering and thirsting of Gods righteousness, if you fill up on the junk food on the world you wont have any room for the bread of life and the milk and meat of Gods word. That which you set your affections on is what you will live for and where you treasure is your heart is also see Matthew 6:21 Matthew 5:6 The Bible also says you cannot serve two masters and I learned this the hard way because my foundation at first was not on Jesus Christ but on other things and I have matured and grown because of the hurts I incurred Peace be with you e4g

I am a Christian & I've always wondered about these "rules" too. When I went to a Christian school I had to wear dresses every day because the Bible says we are to dress modestly & because it says that women should look like women & men look like men. So why aren't the men walking around in long robes? I don't know of anyone in the Bible who wore pants - men OR women but I do know that in certain situations it is certainly MORE modest for a woman to wear pants. My church also use to teach that wearing makeup was wrong but they have since changed their stance on that. My feeling about all of it is this - people who concentrate more on how a person dresses or wears their hair are losing sight of the real meaning and purpose of the word of God. It is supposed to help us find God & find forgiveness of our sins first & foremost. How many people are going to find that meaning if others are continually slapping them upside the head about what they're wearing to come to church to learn the truth? God doesn't give one flying flip what we look like when we come to Him. He just wants us to come & seek Him. When we find Him we instinctively know how to dress appropriately. A Christian, who's goal should be to be Christlike, is going to look beyond these trivial things & care about the soul over the clothes or the hair.

Perhaps it is because certain people teach with a lack of understanding of the whole Word.
Like the example you gave in I Corinth, nature does teach me about long hair, the male lion grows the long mane, not the female.
But if you would have only looked 2 verses down it proclaims:
:
1 Cor 11:16
But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
KJV

Problem is, too many judge according to the flesh, and not the spirit.
:
John 7:24
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment

You assume that your interpretation of scripture is "truth" then set yourself above other Christians who interpret differently. The Bible says this is one of the primary characteristics of carnality. You should re-read the passage in I Corinthians about hair length and really see if it's about "hair" or "contentiousness". Note how Paul asks the church to judge for itself (vs. 13), then concludes his discussion by saying that if the church is going to make hair an issue of contention, then they will have no such "custom" nor any of the churches of God (vs. 16).

And maybe you are right about television. Having the temptation there is too much for some people. Likewise, having internet access can prove to be too much for some people, tempting them to look at porn or inappropriate content. So it might be in a Christian's best interest to get rid of their internet access. Because, after all, we are to separate ourselves from the world. Maybe your church is losing you too because of your love of internet access. Just something to think about.

I agree with what you are saying in "theory" but not in spirit. Sins are symptoms of the problem, not the problem. The problem is that the heart of man is deceitful and wicked. What needs to happen is the heart needs to be changed so that the appetite for evil leaves. And then people get rid of their TVs because they have no appetite for it. To think that if you get rid of your tv then your appetite will change is not correct. You can burn your tvs or cut your hair or whatever and inside you still want to watch tv and have long hair. I think what really happens in that type of church is that you become very legalistic and follow rules but have little compassion for those who are suffering from sin. You drive them away and then they have no place to get the help that they need, so they lose heart and fall away.

The truth shall make you free. Not laws that the pastor preaches. Yes, the bible may say those things about that stuff, but we live under grace. You are focusing on your flesh to much and analyzing about the works. God works through your spirit, not flesh. Try thinking of all others as equal to you, not lower than you. That is the real sin. It is called pride.

Well - probably because a lot of people are only in church for "fire insurance" They don't really want to lay down their lives and follow Christ. They just want to add Jesus to the rest of life.

Now - I don't agree with your examples. But, you're right in saying that they are in the Bible and can cause people to balk. I think the passage you list - 1 Cor - is a cultural note for that time. The TV issue is a personal one. Some people are totally capable of avoiding temptation.

These passages come to mind.

1 Corinthians 6:12
"Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything.

1 Corinthians 10:23
"Everything is permissible"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is constructive.
