I've seen so many posts from all sides of this "belief war" thing that's occuring in these posts. Just out of curiosity I was wondering if some of you would mind posting your belief (Christian, Muslim, Agnostic, Atheist etc...), your age and your general occupation? Just curious as to where the lines (if any) form. Of course you can always post something out of context, those are easy to ignore. I am curious though. This could be interesting.

I'll start:

No, I wasn't in Zep, but what a gig that would have been! Not sure I could fill John Paul Jones's shoes.

Atheist, age 46, college professor and department chair, with a background in belief formation (it was my dissertation topic).

Hmm. I see someone jokingly claimed to be a "rocket scientist". I really am one, with roughly 50 high power rocket flights under my belt.

Thank you for asking the question respectfully, without gratuitous insults. And look! A whole page of responses without one nasty rude comment! My sincere congratulations to all of you.

I am an agnostic.I believe that science has pretty much debunked the existence of a higher being or God....but there are still unexplained phenomena in this world and God MAY be a possible explanation for it. If there is a God, I don't believe he/she/it has a bible, or a Koran, or any form of literature. If there is a God, I believe he'd judge my heart, and not the amount of faith I have. If he was our creator, then he obviously created us to have free will, and to be objectionable. I don't think that we should all be condemned for doing something that he created us to do. Or maybe there is no God but its a bunch of people that are already dead and your "afterlife fate" is decided upon by your peers. Who knows? Its interesting to think about. Sometimes, I'm afraid of death.....other times, I can't wait to see what awaits on the other side. It would kind of suck if it were nothing. Atheists believe that its nothing. It makes more sense than a heaven or hell, I'll give them that. But, when it comes to punishment, of course you must talk of hell also. I believe that if there is a God and a Devil, and if bad deeds must be punished, then they should be punished....but not for eternity. I mean, you don't chop someone's arm off just because they stole your pencil. I think that if there is a punishment, then you are punished until you learn your lesson. I also think that if there is a hell, then its not fire and brimstone and burning, blah blah blah. I think it would be all of your worst fears all put into one. For me, my hell would be: me locked in a pitch-black, cold room...covered in spiders, scorpions, and zombies. Yup.....I also believe that reincarnation is a definite possibility. There are so many people in this world, that as soon as one dies, one is born.....do you think that is the same soul starting over? Its a possibility.
