If you were arrested I would guess that yes, it is.
In Canada you need a permit to possess and/or acquire firearms in all circumstances.

It depends a lot on which state you are in and the mode of carry. We do have the right to keep and bear arms but the method of legally carrying varies greatly state to state. Some states also require that you get a permit to own a gun, which in my opinion is like have to have a permit to have free speech.
If you got arrested I would guess that the firearm was concealed or was attempted to be concealed when you were found with. It may also be that you live in one of the liberal states in the north east or possibly in California. Maryland is about to be in a big lawsuit for arresting a man who had a gun at the airport. He was doing everything by the book and federal law says that you have the right to travel with a firearm. He got arrested and spent five days in jail anyway. The lawsuit may well be a landmark case since the local authorities attempted to supersede federal law.
There is also the possibility that you are underage. Many states have restrictions on minors being in possession of a firearm without immediate adult supervision.
Without more info on you circumstances that's the best I can offer.

Your question doesn't provide enough information. Were you arrested for carrying the firearm on your person or in your car? All states require what is known as a "concealed carry license" in order to legally carry a concealed firearm on your person. The only exception is police officers. And surprisingly, most states prohibit even cops from carrying concealed firearms if they are not residents of that state. You may also never carry a loaded firearm in a vehicle, whether its concealed or not, although many states have an exception for sportsmen, ranchers, ag operators, etc. Go to the website of your state's Dept of Justice or Attorney General's office to learn more about firearms laws. Also, if you're thinking about contesting your case, don't. Firearms violations are extremely difficult to win unless there is an issue of illegal search and seizure. Consult an attorney.

It is illegal to carry a hand gun without a permit but not a shot gun a shot gun has to be in visable sight and not loaded. Next time maybe you should check before so this doesn't happen again.

In New York City and Massachusetts you maybe spend a year in jail. States have different rules Arizona is a open carry state. You can walk down the street with a gun or weapon as long as it is in visible sight and has a legitimate holster http://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/arizona-gun-laws.html
