Okay not to be mean but I think my dog is a little mentally retarded...when I correct him and tell him to go to his bed or to the corner or something he acts like he is going to do it but then tries to bite me when I go to pick him up to bring him there or correct him, because he becomes a statue and wont move to where I wanted him to because he feels like he doesnt half too and then after correcting him he shakes for hours and hours on end to get someone attention because he acts like he was abused, believe me I tap him compared to what I think he should get and then whimpers and makes noises till someone picks him up and if no one does he goes to run off to someone who he knows will give him pitty and snuggle him after he got correct, what the heck do I do because he is learning nothing when I correct him this way!!!

Dogs want attention and they will do whatever they have to to get it. And they even prefer getting in trouble to getting no attention at all. You should work on training your dog to sit and stay and walk on a leash, etc. maybe even teach him some simple tricks like fetch a ball. Then you praise him like crazy when he does things the right way. Its ok to scold him when he does wrong...but never hit him. Your hands should only represent love and affection to your dog. Its going to take lots of patience and repetition but if you spend plenty of time playing with your dog and work on training...he will soon catch on and do what you want.

He's acting that way because he's confused.

When you focus on teaching him what NOT to do, rather than teaching him what you want him TO do, he becomes confused and afraid - so he freezes up, then reacts defensively when you try to correct him.

You need to read a good book on positive dog training and learn how to interact with your dog to teach him what you expect from him. A good positive-methods obedience class would help too. Stay away from trainers who want you to buy a choke collar for class! If your dog already has fear/defensive issues, old-fashioned training will make him worse.

Please head to the pet or book store or library, & pick up these books: The Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller and The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell

And read the link below explaining the Nothing in Life Is Free method. It's good for pushy dogs, shy dogs, and every dog in between, as it helps them understand their place in the household pack order and makes them feel secure.

Once you've started interacting with your dog in a positive manner and he's begun learning what you expect from him, you'll be able to get him to do what you want him to do by telling him - because he's learned what you're asking for and because he wants to do what you ask, not because he's afraid of getting a correction. When you have a good working relationship with your dog, corrections are almost completely unnecessary - if your dog slips up, all you have to do is remind him of what he's supposed to do. At most, a look or a sharp word are all the correction you'll ever need.

Dogs do not know pity so they cannot "ask for it". If you a "tapping" your dog and he snaps at you I should think he does not trust you.Picking a dog up is the same a a challenge in a dogs world so,yes, some dogs do bite as a natural reaction to a challenge. Would you trust anyone who corrects you in a less than positive way?It sounds as if your dog is fearful of you. You need to start training your pup in a positive way. try "Nothing In Life Is Free" training. Many articles are available about it on the internet.

he is learning nothing when I correct him this way!!!---
You said it ! you are clearly NOT communicating with him and when he can't figure you out & freezes in indesision he gets HiT!
How would you like it if your bossy said "hhgah" and then got mad when you didn't know what to do?

FInd that obedience class to teach you to speak dog a little or - well if he was bigger we'd have another dog attack. While a real good tainer is perferable (your vet probably will have references) but even petsmart is better than nothing

I would try ignoring him when he does something bad.

Then when he does something good praise him and give him lots of attention.

Make sure everyone else that is around him does this to.

Then he will learn he only gets attention when he does good things.

It is not the dog, it is the ineffective trainer.

Take a class before you ruin him. NOT a stupid 'furbaby' class like they have at Persmart or Petco, but at an obedience or kennel club.
