Labs are the best, I think Red labs are the most appealing visually, Newfoundlands are fine retrievers also.
Surprisingly poodles are originally retrievers, their coarse coats helped them in cold water and the ridiculous haircuts of today's show poodles are actually exaggerated styles of the cuts which were designed to give most insulation to necessary areas, head, limb joints, etc..
I personally would never have one but apparently they make some of the best retrievers, which makes me wonder if awell trained Labradoodle may be THE best retrieving breed ever.

We have had Labs.. by far they have been the easiest to train, they are excellent retreivers.
We have also had a Golden Retreiver, He was also a very good retreiver and easy to train..But as far a Duck Hunting dog, My labs are the best..
My yellow lab is the best retreiver we've ever had

I would have to say a lab. But, it's really the preference of the dog owner. I had a chocolate lab that was the smartest/best hunting dog that I've ever seen. Now I have a yellow lab that seems to be just as smart. He's in training right now, so next hunting season we'll see how he measures up to the chocolate. All in all, I prefer chocolate labs because they are a better looking dog to me.

My brother had a black lab about 5 years ago. "Prince" was the runt of the litter and turned out to be the biggest dog of the group. With a little work that Prince was the best bird dog I've ever seen. If you let him out when it was still dark, he'd be right up in the back of the pickup ready to go to the duck blind. He'd sit as still as could be until he heard that gun fire then it was ON!!!! I remember one day we went hunting and didn't see a single bird. We had the hardest time trying to get Prince out of the duck blind. :) The dogs have alot of heart and with the right training(TLC....nothing professional) they can make a great retriever and a great friend. When Prince was almost 3 years old we had to put him down because...get this...he had cancer(I had NO idea dogs could have cancer)....

I Prefer Labs, and in color it would Black. I have been in a blind or pit all of my life and I can say there has been numerous different breeds. I agree with the other guy on chocolates beeing the pretties but they are also more likely to be more hyper. I prefer a quite and laid back dog in the blind with me, but that's my opionion. Good luck with the Golden Retriever, but how long does it take for this dog to dry out......

I take it shes a mushy dogs and it is her first wintry climate?? Your mom fairly could re evaluate, its merciless to leave a dogs out in the undesirable climate, they don't look cattle, even then they favor look after, yet domesticated pets, your mom allowed the dogs into the relatives for this reason she could do the right element by using it. If she refuses to then re-abode the dogs. (lol i grow to be going to assert re-abode your mom yet that is not any longer useful!!!) Labradors are very smart dogs, i recognize, I truly have one and he or she must be loopy with boredom stuck outdoors all day/evening....I f she won't be able to be an element of the relatives why did you've her???

Labs are pretty tough to beat when it comes to retrieving anything but they really shine with waterfowl. A Chesapeake Bay Retriever is another good choice. The are a little bigger than labs on average, smell worse and tend to be a one man dog. But they are even stronger swimmers than labs and they seem to be immune to cold weather.
