1. For windows PC click on Start button (left bottom corner or Start key on the keyboard)

2. Click on Settings, Control Panel link
3. On Control Panel window, Click on (Sound and AudioDevice)
4. Click on Checkbox "Place volume icon in the taskbar "

GO into Device Manager and uninstall the soundcard.

Start > control panel > system > device manager.
right click the soundcard and choose uninstall device.

Reboot the PC to redetect it.

Or it could just be the volume is down too low!

Control Panel > Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices

Make sure it is not muted and the levels are set correctly.

I did exactly the same last week. Good or bad heres what I did,bearing in mind Im a novice like yourself.
I restored the Comp to the day before it went wonky to a restore point and he presto it came back
