I need a solo to perform, preferably with piano or guitar, that's in alto to lower soprano range. We normally do folk, jazz, and musicals. I'd like to do something unique and not exactly mainstream pop or rock.

If you truly want to try something unique that requires great ability and technique, look at classical music and specifically the Oratorios. Many Oratorios are in english and the vocal score usually provides a piano reduction. Take a look at the Messiah from Handle, there are some great pieces for Contralto or Mezzo Soprano. Specfically, there is an Air for Bass, "But who may abide" that is very often done by contraltos. It requires a magnificent voice that has the ability to sing coloratura runs and allows you to sing a cadenza at the very end of the Air. I have sung this Air many times and it is always a crowd pleaser....
