it's called "root access" you don't need a 3 party program per se. and it's a great way to get the F.B. fukking I. on your case

Remote desktop is the cheapest since it already comes with windows. But it requires user interaction and has limitations. The best program I've seen for this is Dameware Mini-remote control. All you need is the computer name or IP address and it will push itself onto the remote PC (Assuming you have authority to) It can be configured to remove itself from the client PC when you are done. Plus it contains a full array of utilities, file transfers, etc. Damn good program. Its only limitations are, it doesn't work through a VPN tunnel and it doesn't work with Windows 98.

Why does everyone think IPs are the golden key to hacking?
There not, accept it. Better ways would be to trick the end-user into downloading a keylogger. Not that I'm cordoning this sort of behavious.
If you have Physical Access to the computer, just do a quick Admin change (F8 Key on Start on, click Administrator - Pray it's not password'ed.) - Then install a virus which respondes to you. Then disable all firewalls.
Basically, through IP alone, it's not possible. And also, don't bother hacking. Wrong route to take.

usually you cant just log in to someone's pc using IP address. if you are trying to do it over the internet. You will need some form of desktop sharing program to do this. MSN Messenger and Remote Assistance works for this but it has to be setup on the other person's pc ad usually they hae to accepot the Call. Once accepts you can ue the PC as much as you like running probrams etc as it just appears as another window. Net meeting also has a similar tool.

So long as you have the person's express permission, Windows XP can already do this through Broadband. If you want to help someone fix something on a PC, you can assist, sort of like dual driving, or even take over, am XP Pro pc with their permission. But you cannot do it without their permission. In fact this option can be blocked... its under control panel for remote control in system

I recently purchased a prog on line, and someone asked permission to 'remote' my PC. It was scary watching files opening and closing and the cursor jump around the screen without me touching anything.
So....it can be done. How? Dunno.
Have a look in Settings/Control Panel/System/Remote. It looks as if thats it, but not gonna try on my computer!

It depends on a few things... what sort of access you want and what access to the PC you already have!
If you need to remote control the PC then you can already use things like "Remote assistance" or "remote desktop" to control the PC - but as the other people say, only with their permission.
Alternatively, if you already have physical access to the PC, enable a share on the root of the C drive or their my documents so you can see it remotely. You don;t get to see what they are seeing on the screen, but you can poke around in the hard disk...
cough...
