And even North Americans! But why do you waste your time trying to convince morons who support the Iraq war without the faintest idea where it is located on a map?

I know what you mean. In the map you can see clearly that Mexico is attach to the USA. But a long time ago they put a boarder across the land so no body can come here illegally. But to Understand this you need to know a little bit of history. You need to know that every body that's in the USA migrated from some where. The only true American are the American Indians. They where here first and then Christopher Columbus when on a Journey to find a new world. Ended Up in the Dominican Republic, Killed all the Indians there except the females so they can have their way with. Did the same in Puerto Rico and Cuba. Then Finally ended up in the USA. Took over the land Killed must of the American Indians and push the rest out. (That's why American Indians don't pay tax in this country. and well deserved). Then it was a free for all. European, Frans,Italians, Portuguese's, Irish. etc, Migrated by the millions to the new promised land. And we are know a mix of all that, So therefor: Americans, Cuban. Dominican and Puertoricans are not a race. We are descendants of that mess That Christopher Columbus started. I think that we celebrate Columbus day because if it wasn't for him we wouldn't be here, but hes no Hero. But to answer your globe question, There is North America, Central America and South America. And that mixture of poeple together in the newland (THE USA) make us AMERICAN. IS not a map thing. So it dosen't matter where your parent's are from, if your are born here you are an AMERICAN and have the same right as any body here.

Yes, you are correct, Mexicans and every other persons born in the American Continent IS an American. And for those of you who don't have a clue about geography, The United States of America and Canada are not the only two countries in North America, Mexico is also located in North America.
What does immigration has to do with this? i see many of you are talking about illegal immigration, but the question is not referring to that at all.
P.S. Don't forget that the name of this great country is not America, but United States of America, there is a difference people, stop being so ethnocentric.

In the sense that Mexico is on the continent of North America, yes they are American. But in the sense that Mexico is not part of the United States of America, no they are not Americans. It just depends on how you look at it. Even the people from the U.S.A. has different races. African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, etc, etc, etc...

Use of the word American in the English language differs between historical, geographical and political contexts. Deriving from America, a term originally referring to all of the New World (also called the Americas), its usage has evolved over time, and differs from uses of cognate words in other languages.
The word can be used as both a noun and an adjective. In adjectival use, it is generally understood to mean "of or relating to the United States of America"; for example, "Elvis Presley was an American singer" or "the American president gave a speech today;" in noun form, it generally means U.S. citizen or national. When used with a grammatical qualifer the adjective American can mean "of or relating to the Americas," as in Latin American or Indigenous American. Less frequently, the adjective can take this meaning without a qualifier, even when used in the United States, as in "American Spanish dialects and pronunciation differ by country," or "The ancient American civilizations of the pre-Columbian period were advanced in mathematics and astronomy." A third, but related use of the term pertains specifically to the indigenous peoples of the Americas, for instance, "In the 15th century, many Americans died from European diseases during the Spanish Conquest".
In contrast, cognates of the word "American" in other languages have primarily the pan-American function. For example, the Spanish americano generally refers to the entire New World; the adjective and noun describing the United States is estadounidense, deriving from Estados Unidos de América, the United States of America. Also, the term norteamericano, North American, is used in some Central American and South American countries, to describe the people of the United states. The differences in usage of the cognates cause some cultural friction between U.S. nationals and Latin Americans; Latin Americans, in particular, may object to the primary English usage of American, feeling it unfairly appropriates the term. Of the thirty five sovereign countries in North and South America, only the United States of America contains the word America within its longform name. The use of American as a national demonym for U.S. citizens has been frequently challenged primarily by Latin Americans.

If you are speaking in terms of land continents, that could be the case. If you are speaking of countries, a smaller denomination and more centralized, AMericans are people who live in the United STates of AMerica. That's why we shorten it to Americans. If your are Canadina you could be called American too. I don't think it has anything to do with what color you are. It might for some but not in proper usage.

i understand your question, since so many small countries in europe, lets call it europe! europeans (a continent)...so on our side everybody in north america should be considered americans, since its a continent, its seperate, north america and south america, mexicans would be somewhere in the middle i suppose, not really sure what to call that, but i would just conclude south america, since north is U.S. & Canada.

well, wouldn't a white man who immigrates here from South Africa and becomes a US citizen --- be able to be called an African-American and therefore benefit from the joys of minority quotas and other programs? It's all in a name afterall.
