Try your DVD player no a normal CRT TV or another LCD TV to see if it's the TV.

I take it the DVD is connected by a scart lead. The signal coming through a SCART connection is analogue, the LCD TV only works on a digital signal, therefore the Scart signal is digitised and maybe the conversion is producing this effect, but I would have thought this was only a problem with cheap LCD's and Panasonic tend to be bullet proof.

Enter your DVD's display set up and try different outputs from the SCART socket from the DVD (If you can). You should be able to cycle through, composite, RGB and S-Video. The SCART lead transmits any of these signals at one time, hopefully one of these settings will correct the problem.

It could also depend on what type of TV you are using. Sometimes on older plasmas (or newer cheap ones), you will get a grey picture where it should be black, because plasma cannot display true black (at least not without some tricks which are found on newer high end plasmas). Connect to a CRT and see if it looks the same.
