You want a dog for all the wrong reasons so please reconsider getting one. They have SO much more to offer.

I like the dogue de bordeaux, mainly for the color though. I think the bullmastiff's tend to have cuter faces as they get older. The bullmastiff will be bigger, but they should be very similar in their guard dog personailities and capabilities. Don't forget the English Mastiff as well!
If you were looking for suggestions other than what you listed, check into a Boxer.

Depends on what you need them to guard..
If it is for your home I suggest a Bullmastiff as they were specifically bred to knock down and hold their prey and NOT BITE
and to wait until their master arrived.. thus being called the "nightwatchman's guard" (I just got a bullmastiff mix pup and she is soo small right now I can't imagine her pinning someone down--but of course she is just a pet and I won't be training her to do any such thing anyhow!)
Other than that, unless you know what you are doing and therefore would have already done your research and not need to know what type what type of dog to get A.S.A.P---slow down!! take your time, find out what type of dog would be best for YOU.
And by the way, most any dog that is loyal to his pack will alert the master at any sign of intruder, so if all you want is a fur-alarm then just go take a walk at your local SPCA and your pal will find YOU, I promise..

I highly recommend German Shepherd. I have one and he's like the best dog ever. He's really friendly but his barks scares the hell out of people (during halloweens he scares away the kids sometimes) On top of that he's a decent size dog that wouldn't be killed by thieves in like one or two kicks. In my neighborhood there's alot of break ins recently, and my house wasn't one of them. Our dog even inspired my neighbor to get a dog as well XD. But the only thing is that you have to a responsible owner.

I have two German Shepperd's and although they are the cuddliest and sweetest things on the face of the earth, and would never hurt a fly, they are big and make a lot of noise if they see someone they don't recognize, and that alone is enough for anyone to decide its not worth attempting anything.

The only thing I have against the really huge dogs is their life span.
I have a german shepard/labrador mix and he is 12. Many great danes and mastiffs dont go beyong 6-9 years.

I had a boxer / great dane mix and it was bad to the bone. A friend of mine "rescued" it from a junkyard when it was a puppy.

Personally, I would go with a German Shepherd, because they are great watch dogs, great with children, if you have any, and they are very loyal to their owners.
