Many people (not just chinese) believe that honor and integrity are extremely desirable qualities in a person. Anything that tarnishes that honor will affect your standing in society and how people respect you.

Japanese culture is probably one society where honor and showing respect has strongly affected the daily lives of its inhabitants.

Everything from caring and listening to the older generation down to cooking a meal properly has rituals where honor is affected, and "saving face" is a way of showing that you feel you made a mistake or are trying to remain humble.

Christianity preaches that vanity and envy are two of the deadly sins. Saving face allows you to (to a certain extent) be less vain, or in a way prevent others from becoming envious.

Western society could learn from the east. Imagine if you could gain respect and honor by offering to pay for their coffee if you accidentally bumped into them on the street, instead of pulling out a weapon or swearing at them for getting in your way.

Not only the Chinese think it's important. "Saving face" is the art of negotiation: each party goes away from the discussion table thinking they won.

I'm Chinese, and I don't care about saving face. That's really racist, John Doe.

I think it's in part because the most important thing is honor. To be dishonored... or to dishonor or disrespect another... that's the worst.
