Try saying, "Well, I won't keep you."

Explain that other people in the house need to use the phone and you do not have call waiting.

Tell the person that you have to go point blank. You have a right to get off the phone even if only to go sit in a corner and stare at the wall.

I also suggest starting the conversation with a time limit
"Hi Lucy, how are you? I'd love to talk, but only for ten minutes because I have a lot of things to do today."

Do what my friend does, "I have to go, my battery is almost dead on my cell phone."
Boy, I wish she would charge her cell more often! LOL.
Or do what my long winded friend did, she bought a headset, and talks while going about the chores of daily living, I go to the bathroom with her, to the grocery, to the hardware store to listen fo the saleperson sell her ventian blinds and tile.I go evetywhere!
Just say, oops, gotta go, do this several minutes before you really do gotta go, so you can say a proper goodbye, and make arrangements to talk again. You do not owe the person an excuse on why you gotta go, , but don't lie if you are not good at it., either.

Buy a dicta-phone and get someone to record an exchange of words on it for you, like a request to come quickly as something is or has just happened. Or record a very loud barking dog and hold close to the receiver, make your apologies and say you have to go and shut the dog in the kitchen or something. Or ultimately you could just be blunt and tell them you're hanging up now as the urge to kill, mame and destroy is rising, works for me but then I have really lonely birthdays.

If it's a cell phone just hang up......if they call back tell them you have a bad connection. LOL

If you are a bad liar, there is really no nice way to tell them you have to go. If you would rather be doing something other than talk to them tell them you have to go and if they ask why....be vague tell them you have some things to do. On the other hand you could be honest.....which isn't always polite but at least you didn't lie.

Maybe you could say, "I've really enjoyed speaking with you and I'm sorry to cut this so short, but I really have to go now." You don't have to give a reason why. If they ask "why" maybe you could say, "I have a ton of things to do and some errands to run." Which is true because everyone always has some type of errand to run eventually.

Don't say, "I'll call you back." Because that puts the pressure on you. Ask them to call you back instead.

Well, there's someone like that in my life. It takes them 30 minutes to say something that should take 2 minutes... the way I do it is I just listen to them talk (since you never get a word in), and then when they're finished I agree, and I say something like ... "alright.... well..." and then they start wrapping it up and within 30 seconds you're off the phone. Works every time!

Well I understand that you are bad liar, but a white lie won't hurt. Just say, I hear someone knocking on the door, or my cloths dryer just buzzed I need to get the cloths out. Just come up with something simple like that.

You don't have to lie. Simply say "I'm sorry, but I have to go. Goodbye." That is not an insult, and it is not a lie. If the person were to confront you later and get personal, simply say "I had to go to the bathroom and then got distracted." If they can't accept that as a complete and satisfactory answer, then they do not deserve to be treated courteously.
