Actually male cats tend to be more affectionate than their female counterparts. Females (or queens) are territorial, feeling the need to "protect" certain spaces and places. This behavior often continues on even if the female is spayed. Males (toms) have some territorial tendencies, but not to the point of being defensive or aggressive about them. As a result they tend to be more "social" and incline to readily approach other cats and people.
It isn't that much of an issue to worry about if you have a one-year-old male, when it comes to getting another cat. I'd suggest picking the one that you seem to bond with the most readily -- regardless of age or gender. However (and it's a "big" however) if you are looking to stack the odds of the two cats getting along a younger male would be most likely to produce a smoother transition to a two cat household. Good luck on your kitty addition! --Andy

I think male cats, in general, tend to be more affectionate than female cats. Some people have these ideas about whether two males, two females or a male and female make better house mates, but I think it really just depends on the cats. I have two males and they love each other. The older one tried to kill the younger one for about a week when I got him, then he just gave up and now they can't live without each other. Rescue from a humane group and let them know your situation. Often they can let you know if the cats they have in the rescue are OK with other cats. Some cats just like being only children.

No, female cats aren't ALWAYS more affectionate than males. I have a female and a male and the male cat is the most affectionate animal I've ever had. He loves to be right up on people's laps. He gives kisses and can't stand to sleep without human companionship.. She, on the other hand, loves to sleep in the basement and keeps away from people for the most part.

Animals are different like fingerprints.. No two are alike!!

Female cats are not more affectionate than a male as far as affection goes. But even with putting two neutered male cats together you can have dominance issues and a neutered male can still spray and mark their territory. I have had an issue like this one and I would recommend getting a spayed female to be on the safe side.

Most cats and kittens respond to female or children voices than males so I'd think that if the cat is male then the chances are that the cat will respond to the child or female voice in the house and give them more effection then the male

It is said that once a cat is altered, inside they think and act neither male or female. I have had both male and female cats, and to my experience the males played harder, but in the end were the big time cuddlers. I would say that male cats are more affectionate, but it really depends on how they were raised and the type of personaliy they have.

I have a 4 year old male, and just recently got a very young female kitten, they are both spayed/neutered, they seem to get along very well... sometimes the kitten annoys the older cat but i think it's just her hyperness, they clean each other and play together and such, though and haven't gotten into any fights, so i would pick female though i believe also it depends on the individual cats personality :)

i have two male cats and they both are the most affectionate things I can think of, it gets annoying if I let them sleep in my room on cold nights and they wont stop nagging for attention. I've only ever had one female cat when I was a child but she tragically died just 3 days after I got her, I was only 6, broke my heart =(. So, if females are more affectionate, I can't say for sure, but if my two are anything to go by, the girls have got a lot to work for.

Who's more effectionate has nothing to do with gender.

My male cat is way more effectionate than my female cat. He always wants to be carried and petted, and meows all the time when your not giving him attention. Our female cat wants no attention usually unless she wants it once in a great while. She usually keeps to herself.
