i'm thinking about buying a handgun, mainly just for target shooting and plinking, also maybe home defence. nothing serious, i dont plan to enter any competitions, so it doesnt have to be the best gun(i wouldn't be looking at high-point if i was that serious). has anyone ever had any problems with high-point handguns? i know they have a poly frame, is it prone to cracking or anything? what do you think about the gun?

also i want to point out that i have a 12 gauge remington 870, a ruger 10/22, and a sks, so the whole home defence thing isn't much of a problem, especially since right now i live in a small town. i want something bigger than a .22. it would be alright, but i want something a little more powerful. right now im actually thinking it might be a better idea to wait, then save up and buy something nicer, such as a ruger .45

also i might use it for deer hunting, since the high-point only has a 4.5" barrel, that would not be legal.

I own two Hi-Points, a 9mm. and a 40S&W. I have never had a problem with either one. They are accurate and dependable. If you go to their website there are links to some forums discussing these weapons in detail. They are American made and have a no questions asked lifetime warranty! My 40 S&W only cost me $ 173.99 out the door! For the price and shootability I don't think you would be dissappointed.

My personal opinion would be to spend my money elsewhere.

They may be decent for awhile, but not for long. Your money would be more wisely spent on something else that will hold it's resale and last a lifetime. Except for the home defense part, I would recommend a Ruger Mark III and it would be better than nothing for home defense. They are well built accurate and will last forever.

The Ruger Mark III is a .22 rimfire auto loader and is available in the old style grip frame or the newer 22/45 frame that is angled more like a lot of other semi-auto's, so if you ever purchased another pistol it wouldn't feel all that different.
You should be able to find one from around $225 and up depending on the style you choose.

I had a 9mm highpoint about 6 years ago and really didn't care for it. It was crude bulky and the sights were very imprecise. I didn't like the cheap feel of it so I traded it for a dog and bought a Berretta 45acp. I still have the dog and the 45 and have no regrets. The Berretta feels like a gun should, smooth, solid, and comfortable.
Maybe I'm just picky but shooting the Berretta after shooting the highpoint felt like driving a new Cadillac after driving your sisters hand me down hooptie.

The polymers of today are very good but i don't trust them whats the matter with good gun steel I am not a big fan of simi auto's I'm a revolver man and like .357 magnum's and i like American handguns my personal favorite is S&W 686 combat magnum in 4'' barrel. This also gives you the option of using 38spl. Most gunfights only last about 3 to 4 rounds anyway and a blast from a .357 will do the trick.

Good guns for the money, but not much to look at. They are lifetime guaranteed so it doesn't matter if the frame ever cracks, you get a new one.

They will take care of business and not cost a lot to purchase. Looks aside, they function as intended.

The gun operates well. Unfortunately, the trigger is hell and the gun doesn't handle very well. So far though, it goes "bang" every time

There will always be some idiot who will tell you "they're ok, but....", or "I wouldn't buy one", or more of the same crap.

Bottom line? They're considered ugly by some....only because they missed that time about ten-fifteen years back when ugly was the in thing. Their carbine is truly hideous! But they work *every* time....and every time they get reviewed, they shine.
