So the girl does not drive herself insane wondering "why" and what she did and what is wrong with her. It's easier to just say "its not you, its me" so the other party doesn't have the option of saying "well I can change". They are just wanting out, period.

It's a mans way of trying to make you feel better about the breakup - giving you the opportunity to blame the man (after all, he has already said it is him). It also let's him feel better, thinking that he has made the pain of a breakup a little easier to take.

because they are giant as*holes that only think with their dick. (Also, they say this becuase they don't want to spend 2 hours conversing over who did what and how many annoying habits you have. They just blame it on themselves so they can get it over and done with quick and slightly painless...like ripping off a band-aid.)
