The answer is yes. There is a small catch in this. Religious people are really selfish only in respect of possessing the God but not other things. Ordinary beings are selfish to possess all other things except God.

Religious people should be more aware of their selfishness and shift toward God/other centerdness and away from self centerdness. Unfortunately some use religion as a fancy coat to simply cover what they don't want themselves or others to see. True religion is doing justice by caring for widows/orphans/poor, loving mercy and walking humbly with God.

Yes, people who are religious for the sake of religion usually are more selfish to the poiint of being evil, in fact. You may find it interesting to read "People of the Lie" by Scott Peck.

However, one who is really following Jesus is told that he must die to himself. This is an ongoing choice throughout his life and it produces a distinctively selfless behavior. (usually)
