That happened to me, & I still have the scar he left me there from 2 months ago. I was wrongfully mentally hospitalized & put in handcuffs.

Sometimes the cuffs do cause bruises.

When I was in the academy, everyone had to get handcuffed several times to heighten our awareness to how it feels if someone "slaps on the cuffs." I know it can hurt.
I try to be extra gentle when the person I am taking into custody is suffering from some type of mental problem. I don't really see them as being a criminal, just someone who needs to be restrained to keep them, as well as myself and my partner safe.
That being said, the handcuffs are metal, your hands go behind your back, and if you are sitting in the cruiser for any amount of time, there is going to be some pressure and some friction.
I lock the cuffs to make sure that they don't get any tighter, and I try to make sure that anyone I have in custody is comfortable.

I am only the arresting officer, and I don't pass sentence by making people any more uncomfortable than they already are.

Handcuffs do not cause injuries unless you are struggling in them. How do you get a scar from being "bruised up" as you state? The cuffs will scrape and cut if they are on snugly and you are moving around a lot. We are trained to put them on so that you can only fit one finger between the cuff and the wrist. This would feel tight on anyone, put does not cause injury. If you are fighting the cuffs they will sometimes tighten further if they were not double locked. We are trained to double lock cuffs only when we have the time and the person is not resisting (have to put the end of the key into a teeny tiny hole).

I'm sorry to say that I don't believe that you weren't resisting to some extent. I only usually put cuffs on mentally ill persons if I suspect they are violent or an escape risk, but our departmental policy states that they shall be put on all person under arrest.

No, police officers are not supposed to...look up online "police brutality"...it is sick and disgusting how police officers today think they can "rough people up" or hurt them just because they have a badge. I have known good and bad cops throughout the years and have been handcuffed myself a couple of times...and I can tell you that it is WRONG if they "bruised you up"...unless you attacked them ect...which I doubt. The cuffs are supposed be loose enough to fit 2 small fingers in there.

KC V : Manxbiker is a Manx guy. in the Isle of guy we are civilised. on condition that our very youthful age we are taught know and concern of Police. Manxbiker who's plenty nicer than I has under no circumstances felt the discomfort of their anger, I do. consequences : on the Island as quickly as we do something si-lly we pass in direction of the Policeman (whilst they arrive) and we obey. most of the time a single frown of Policeman is sufficient to remind us of the order. it is totally uncommon that they handcuff us. So a 2nd pair of handcuffs is ineffective. returned up is a humorous tale. in the Isle of guy a Policeman can arrest 2 or 3 offenders with out handcuffs them.

Handcuffs aren't designed for comfort. If the officer put them on improperly (didn't check for fit & double lock them), then it is very possible that your injuries from the cuffs are due to his error(s). That being said, if you turn your wrists, they will tighten even if they are properly fit & double locked.

But how easily do you bruise?

If you sometimes have unexplained bruising ( I know I do- and I bruise easily, or I forget what happened to cause the bruise)
then that's maybe why you bruised?

That, or maybe they were too rough.

None here can tell you why it happened. We weren't there.

handcuffs leave bruises. sometimes, if you pull against them they'll dig into your wrists and actually split the skin and cut you. It's unfortunate, but it happens.
