Today a lot of it has to do with money. Also, there are a lot of opinions and people want to make sure theirs is heard.
I would also say that the books of the bible are thousands of years old. They were written in different languages and under different customs and it is nice to have someone knowledgeable relay important information on to those who have not yet become as knowledgeable.

Quite simply because someone is more likely to pick up a book rather than the bible. If you read the bible you wouldn't need so many explanatory books.
But I guess it is an old text and requires a little outside research into the meaning of words, how they were used, etc.
Not everyone has time for that I suppose.

I don't think it does. The Bible is perfectly understandable if you have an open mind while reading it. People just want to help so they make the explanatory books. Same with almost every other social topic. Either they want to help or make money.

Have you read it, lolol. A lot of different type of books are based on the Bible itself, fiction, research, non-fiction, even comedy and of course inspiration, etc. The fiction is usually about armeggedon, but as you have seen recently it can be about other things, such as The DaVinci Code. The research books are helpful if you are studying the Bible because they provide maps, historial facts, explain differences in societies, etc. A lot of people do write books on their experiences finding God.
Basically, the Bible could stand alone, but other writings to help us to understand the deeper meaning behind the words. We must always be careful though, to not forget that works of fiction are not books of the Bible.

Some books are written to teach people the basics of the Bible, while others are for the deeper things.
Some books are to point out only one topic, while others cover many things.
Some books are done in one stile, while others differ to help people understand the same things.

There have been commentaries from the beginning of time. It's human nature to have one's own "take" on the matter. The Jews had their scholarly commentaries (The Talmud) and the Apostolic Fathers wrote much in the first few centuries of Christendom. It's natural to try to explain such a profound set of documents as the Holy Scriptures.
