I live in a city where everyone rides a car. People will ride their car to go to the convenience store 2 or 3 blocks away. I like to ride what many think it’s crazy around here. I ride my bike few miles inside the city, and then tell people about it; everyone gives me this look as though I have issues or if I were crazy. People always go WHY? There’s not even public transportation where I live because everyone simply rides their own car. Sometimes I call friends who live a few miles away, and go to their places on my bike, I get there, they see I got there on my bike, and look at me as though I were on drugs or something. I know it’s uncommon in my city. People have called me stupid or dumb just I go to the Supermarket on my bike, and bring some of the groceries on it. They say I’m insane because I say I want to get in better shape, so I can ride all the way to the preppy mall on the other side of town.
But, why do people look at me as though I were crazy?

It's natural for people to scoff at what they don't understand. I ride my bicycle to and from work and people flip out about that. I also run errands on my bicycle and find it annoying that it is so difficult to find a bike rack.

If you are worried about fitting in when you are riding your bike everywhere, move to China. Then people will just look at your weird because you look different. Happy biking!

Good on you, keep it up. Just tell them how practical it is, no parking worries. How you feel better for it. How it saves you a small fortune. How it is good for the environment. But mostly how much fun your having.
Sooner or later some will catch on and start riding themselves. Then it snowballs. Be the trend setter

You will always get strange reactions from non-cyclists when you tell them you prefer to ride.(especially any distance). It is a normal reaction. If they get used to seeing a few bikes around they get more accepting.

To answer the question just plain ignorance

Maybe it's because they wish they could do that. The other people in your city that give you nasty looks are too lazy to get out their bikes and ride them once in a while (and not just in the park).
Kudos to you for helping save our environment! I say, just ignore them and go on your merry way.

Its typical that people are afraid to what they don't know, understand or can't do.

They don't understand and they wish they could be doing it.
