My little Mutt is the perfect small dog.. I have a houseful of extra large purebred dogs, but my little mutt rules over all!.
Yep, she is the perfect small dog for my lifestyle.
She's a Doxie/Silky mix, and looks just like a smaller Benji..but cuter!

My favorite is a Havachon! It is a mix between a Bichon Frise! She is about 9 pounds and she doesnt shed at all. Her fur is silky and white. She is the most beautiful dog I have ever owned. She has the sweetest personality and loves everyone including other dogs, so thats my favorite :)

I'd recommend a poodle mix of some kind. Since you said under 20 lbs, it would have to be one of the miniatures, but hopefully not a toy.
Personally what I want is a dalmatian standard poodle mix, but these would run up to 50 lbs. Yup, I want a spotted doodle.

I personally like bigger dogs, but have recently seen "mini goldendoodles"
I'm not too big on the designer breeds because i fear health problems, but they don't shed much because of the poodle mix, and would have more of a big dog feel.
My friend has a dachsund, Twinkie. I love that dog, that could be an option.

Australian Terriers are very good dogs....they don't shed alot, and don't require alot of grooming, and they are very cute too. I love this dog b/c they are so smart and obedient and unlike other terriers they are not as hyper or bark alot. They also have little to no health problems. Australian Terriers can be hard to find b/c not alot of people have them.

Schnoodle(a mix of a schnauzer and a poodle). I have one, and he's just the sweetest little dog! He's under 20 lbs., rarely sheds(poodles and schnauzers rarely shed), and he's MORE than cute! He's adorable!

Cocker spaniels...hands down!! They never lose their puppy faces, do not shed a whole lot--if at all, and no matter what kind of cocker they are: buff, chocolate, parti, black...they're all absolutely adorable!! Sweetest babies you could come across...however, they do have boundaries and will establish them! They don't have the highest of tolerance levels...but are very sweet, lovable and loyal animals. We are going to get our third cocker by the end of this year...and I'm sooo looking forward to that! You only have to own one cocker to fall in love with the breed! *very sweet*

There are things that I enjoy about both small and large dogs. But, I'd have to say small breeds with smooth coats. I've had larger dogs for most of my life, but for the last five years I've had a chihuahua. Now I absolutely love small dogs...

I have a black lab/ beagle mix who is very devoted and mellow, a good watch dog and very obedient. I also have a shi shiu/ Pekingese mix who is lively, mischievous and stubborn. They adore each other and I love them both. The black one doesn't shed much but the little guy does.

Even though I own a lab mix, golden retrievers are my absolute all time favorite breed. Labs come in at a VERY close second.
