any info that may help would be great. I really dont like Ivermec because it can kill the dogs. Since these are strays theres no way to know what they are mixed with.

Please dont say to go to the vet. The vet has been there and remeber these are shelter dogs the city wont pay for vetting, and we cant pay to treate them all at the vet.

Sarcoptic mange is fairly easy to kill with dips (Amitraz), pour-on miticides (alcohol based Ivomec), or oral products (Milbemycin - Interceptor). The condition also may need to be treated with an antibiotic for the secondary bacterial infection and corticosteroids to decrease the intense itch and inflammation.

Revolution!!! Revolution is a topical flea/tick product you apply once a month between the shoulder blades. Not only is it awesome at killing fleas and ticks, but it is also guards against heartworm and kills sarcoptic mange. It is prescription-only in the United States (due to the anti-heart worm properties) but is available without a prescription online at Canadian animal pharmacy sites. I've had two shelter dogs with sarcoptic mange, and this product (applied every two weeks until the mange was gone) killed the mange in about a month, with the coat looking much better after two months.
You also might look into the various dips they have for sarcoptic mange. They don't contain Ivermectin, but they do contain some very strong chemicals.
Hope this helps...

DIPPING - Anti-bacterial or anti-itch shampoos preceed one of several anti-mite dips. Paramite dip (an organophosphate), Mitaban dip (Amitraz), and Lime-Sulfur dips given weekly are usually effective. Disease typically resolves within one month.

MILBEMYCIN OXIME (INTERCEPTOR® OR SENTINEL®) - Milbemycin Oxime is approved for heartworm prevention as a monthly oral treatment. Happily, it also has activity against sarcoptic mange and several protocols of varying success have been recommended by different dermatologists. This is another medication that one might find recommended.

Hartz Mountain flea powder actually works on sarcoptic mange--it says it right on the back---do NOT use too much, because like any chemical, it can be toxic for the animals.
