As a woman who has desired to be a nun, I can answer that. A nun (or priest) feels the call of a spiritual life. They desire to devote their lives in service of God and prayer, to help others and give back to this world. It's a freeing experience to know that you're helping someone and to be in a community of like-minded individuals. They love what they do for they are called to do so.

Many people devote their lives to a higher spiritual calling regardless of their belief system.
Those who choose the priesthood or become nuns as a vocation do so out of the desire to share God's love with others, serve their community and/or the downtrodden, homeless, hurt, etc. Jesus says, "Whenever you do this for the least of these (people), you do it for me." Some people feel a very mystical connection with their "god" and this leads them to live a life of devotion to their faith (whatever their faith/belief system may be).
In the past, especially in large Catholic families, it was traditional for families to "give" a son or daughter to "The Church."
Sometimes people try the seminary in an attempt to get away from problems in their own lives and start afresh.
Your question is a simple one; however, there are no easy answers and each person who seeks to serve their god has a unique reason for doing so.

They have a deep inner love for God, and see life as an opportunity to give back to him what He has done for them. To show his love and do his work in response. They also know they will spend eternity with him.
A "Born-Again" person has had their entire view of life change, and sees serving and loving God as far and away the most important thing in this life. And that is what Priests, Nuns, Pastors do.

Contemplative life is very appealing to the very spiritual because the world at large can make things difficult meditate, pray and so forth... deep meditation and contemplative prayer is VERY beneficial to understanding scripture, etc. therefore those who believe in scripture, etc. sometimes long for the contemplative world of monks and nuns and the priesthood. Bottom line: you DO what you enjoy doing most. That's what finding a job is supposed to be all about.

In my case it was a calling that I ran from for the first 38 years of my life. I lived 38 years for me - I figure I owed the second "half" to God.

Well generally they are giving up their lives to help poor lost souls like you.
I will not get into the recent bad stuff in the Catholic Church.
But Praise God...
See he is even working on your heart right now...
please enjoy your stay in the Religion and spirituality section.
GOD BLESS YOU.

In the Catholic church? Some do and some don't. It all depends on if they truly confessed Jesus Christ their Lord from their heart and believed in the atonement for sins and resurrection from the dead.
They have to be born of God to know God and devote their lives to God.

Because that is the goal of human life. They have already realized it and are doing it. That is what differentiates human beings from animals.
