As far back as time goes history demonstrates that they can't or simply don't. The only exception to that is that Muslims who have lived in America for some time appear to be tolerant and accepting of people with other religious views.

It was Muslim persecution of Christians who made pilgrimages to the holy land that led Pope Urban the second in 1095 to call on the Christian Crusades.

People are PEOPLE first... religion comes as a choice. ANYBODY can be altruistic, intelligent, learned and kind, tolerant etc.
