Alsatian or German Shepard it was the friendliest dog I've ever known and very intelligent i was gob smacked when i returned home late one night and found I'd lost my keys , i went around back and climbed over the wall , i landed in the yard and my dog bolted over an 8 feet high fence (he could get in and out of the house into his own yard at will) and i swear he would have killed me had i not shouted his name (it was very dark) i would never have believed this dog capable of growling in a nasty manner but i learnt that night that i never had to fear a break in , god i loved that dog .

I read the first part of your question and I was going to suggest a Cocker Spaniel (number 1 on the bite list :P )
But then i read the second half haha.
I suggest a dog like a Rottweiler, a Doberman or Great Dane. All three of these are impressive looking dogs, are excellent with children (providing they are raised right, with training and socialization) are intimidating to intruders, and are protective of their families. If you consider any large dog (especially rotties) make sure you socialize it with any family members or friends who may come to visit as they ARE protective. I have a neighbor who's Rott wont let anyone in unless he knows them or his owner greets them at the fence. Once you pick a puppy make sure you have chosen your vet, what you are feeding, and who your trainer will be. I reccomend having all this set up before you purchase your puppy. It will make it less stressfull for you and the dog. Also, start training early, I cannot count how many large young dogs I've seen walk into obedience classes totally out of control because their owners werent on the ball.. It's much harder to control a large breed who's untrained than a little bitty one. Good luck with your search!

EDIT: Though alot of people suggest German Shepherds, I would not. Yes they CAN be good with children, but they also have a tendancy to be unpredictable. I really suggest not purchasing one unless you are an experienced handler. However if you decide against this advice. Get into training as soon as possible... If he's too young for classes, go to puppy play times for socialization.

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/tp2Ok

By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.

To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

Beleive it or not German Shepards are the best dogs. B/c if treated as best as humanly possible, they will be the best watchdogss ever. My friend had one that would go with her everywhere and would even walk her to the door of the store and back to the car to wait for her. They are very loyal! Just never abuse them and you'll have the bet damn guard dog ever!

The Doberman, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Kangal Dog, Bullmastiff, American Bulldog, Pitbull, Kunming Dog are often used as guard dogs.

I'm not sure about the being good with children, though.

I would definitely suggest a Boxer. They are FANTASTIC with kids, and are very protective and good guard dogs. Not only will they be protective, they look fairly intimidating to a stranger who doesn't know them.

Dobermans and German Shepards tend to be protective of their family. This is the reason they are used most often as "guard dogs." Be warned: if you train this dog to be a "guard dog," be prepared for the consequences.

BTW: both breeds are wonderful w/children.
