If you are unable to cough up 50-75$ for an adoption fee,how do you expect to afford food ,supplies and veterinary care for a dog? I suggest you reconsider your position.

I agree with the first answer. If you can't afford the adoption fee, (usually about $90), then you can't afford the dog. The adoption fee not only helps maintain those shelters, but ensures that the animal goes to a loving responsible home.
If you are looking for companionship from an animal, why not volunteer for one of those shelters instead or foster a pet. If you foster, you will be responsible for taking the dog for his vet visits, but the costs of caring for the animal will be covered by the shelter.

I'm not sure if your local shelter does; but ours has a program that is called " senior for senior " & they adopt out older animals for older folks at a discounted price. You might want to check around & see if any where does that. Otherwise I doubt you will find a place, usually the only reason that they do charge is to make sure that the animal gets fixed & such. Good luck finding one; also I'm not sure if they have the senior program but petsmart adopts out dogs & puppies on the weekends maybe you could try there as well.

I think it's great that you want to adopt! And dogs are not that expensive to own and care for. Love is mainly what you need and you seem to have plenty of that.
Many humane societies (and some city/county shelters too) have programs called "Seniors for Seniors," which help senior citizens adopt older dogs. I would call all your local humane societies to ask if they have a similar program.
Craig's List and petfinder.org are other good resources, but I would let your fingers do the walking and start calling around in your area. Shelter workers will often have great info to help you.
Meanwhile, I have a couple of tips for dog lovers out there on wehow.com:

The adoption fee usually includes the following:
Sterilization
Vaccinations
Microchip
De-worming
If you get a free animal and have to go to the vet and pay for all of these items, you'll end up spending A LOT more, so the adoption fee is certainly the way to go.

Sal, dogs are expensive, even without medical problems, if you can't afford the adoption fee, then you can't afford the expenses, which are regular shots, possible grooming, possible emergency care, food, bed, collar, leash, shampoo, heartworm preventative, flea and tick preventative, getting their teeth cleaned by the vet, treats, medicines and treatments in case of illness, if you need to do out of town, boarding, registering the dog in the city where you live.

nicely if you're pondering a pitbull i desire you've researched them alot. those are a particular breed (I own one and love her to lack of existence)however the reason mosy finally end up in shelters is because the vendors favor a "propose" canines and do not understand the thanks to precise look after them,in turn they are abandoned, abused or attack someone. once you've appeared into it and favor one i might want to point Willow because she's in foster care today, you could ask those human beings how she is in a house putting and it says she's solid with different animals ect. For the different breeds Barry as a stray has no historic past information and neither does River,so it is demanding to assert what to anticipate. Max would nicely be a sensible decision pondering the comments. So in all i guess i'm saying both Max or Willow..solid success and Congrats!!

If you can't afford the adoption fee, how can you afford food, collar, toys, vaccinations? What happens if the dog gets sick and has to go to the vet? Would the dog have to suffer because you "can't afford to pay for the vet bills"?

If you can't afford the adoption fee, how do you have the money to care for the dog? Dogs are expensive. They need proper vaccines, grooming, proper food, bathes, vet visits, etc.

Try checking your local newspaper classified ads. There might be dogs that are in need of a home badly and are being given away for free.
