It really does depend on who the person was and in what way you loved them. To lose a child or a spouse is completely devastating and sometimes people don't recover from that loss. To lose a parent can be just as hard but people get up and carry on in a shorter amount of time because you love your parent differently than you love your wife or husband or child. To lose a friend can hurt like hell but you love them differently as well. There is no real way to answer this. I have lost many friends and a few family members and it depends on how close you were and how they died. I have lost an aunt to a bad heart and that didn't hurt as much as losing a friend in the war.

I lost both of my parents in 2005, my Dad in June and my Mom on Christmas Day. It is hard to describe the sense of loss that you experience. You have a huge hole in your life that you just can't seem to fill. You realize just how much of your own history is lost to you because the people who know what and how it happened are no longer there to answer your questions. There is not a single day goes by that I am not reminded of their absence in my life. Simple things like a favorite food or restaurant or something that would make them a good gift brings back the fact that they are no longer here. It makes you appreciate the time you have to spend together, it makes you encourage others to mend relationships and build memories before its too late and most sadly, there are never enough memories. You realize just how much influence and guidance they provided and how much you learned from them and how much you love them.

I lost my father on January 2nd of this year ( two weeks ago). It has been horrible. The first week was not too bad because you are so busy w/ funeral arrangements and friends coming by etc..
but when all is over and everyone is gone it hurts like hell. Somedays are worse than others and you find yourself picking up the phone to call and tell them something and then you remember they aren't here and your heart breaks. I'm hopefull that everyday will get better but right now it doesn't seem to be.

My heart feels torn apart, & it takes me over a year to get over the grief or loss of a loved one.
