The pills (and patches) claim to remove the impurities in the alcohol (that cause the hangover) from the blood stream. Thereby assisting the body with metabolizing the alcohol in your system. It may help a little bit but it's not going to keep you from having a hangover entirely if you drink too much.

They don't. If you don't want a hangover, simply don't drink.
But if you do drink, then make sure that you do a few simple things:
1 - Stay hydrated with things other than beer and liquor. For every mixed drink, drink a glass of water. This will help your body break it down quicker.
2 - Eat a healthy diet, every day, even when not drinking. Alcohol depletes many vitamins in the body, and if you are deficient in these, the hangover will be more severe.
3 - Moderation. If you're just drinking to get drunk, you will have a hangover. If you are drinking in a social setting, then know your limits. Not only will you not get drunk and have a hangover, but you won't get drunk and say/do stupid things.

They don't really work. You need to rehydrate; get your electrolytes back in order, and rid your body of the alcohol and congers (the additives in the dog that bites). Sleep and some analgesics help the pain. Now say to yourself "I'm never doing that again"... with or w/o the lord part.
