Golden's are notorious for "carting" things around. It is one of their wonderful character traits. If you would rather she not carry her dish; put it up and make sure she has toys available to carry around. My Golden does the same when I arrive home from anywhere, even just a quickie to the mailbox! It is the "retriever" instinct and perfectly normal.

I love these good natured dogs as a family companion even though i own German Shepherds . These dogs were bred for hunting fowl and caring in an instinct of their breeding.Give him/her a daily work out retrieving tennis balls Here is the way i do my shepherds . I have a 2 acre lake and i attach a dog life preserver { purchased at KV vet supply,Internet ] and knock tennis balls and they return them. They love doing this and there is no better exercise. If a safe place with water is not available you can use your back yard or a safe park. Also supply him with a LARGE beef Knuckle bone,it will passify him and is good to keep his teeth and gums healthy. They like these to use as a cataglist..The bone will take place of the feed pan.http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=SPDA,SPDA:2006-50,SPDA:en&q=GOLDEN+RETRIEVER+DOG

That's normal, after all the dog is a golden retriever. They are meant to retrieve things and be helpful. I had a GR that carried at least 3 things around at once.

Simply put ,when a dog does this the item is his imaginary friend. It is not just a Retriever thing,I had a Pit that carried a stuffed toy with him much of the time and a friend has a Wolf hybrid that does it too.I can't swear to it but my opinion is that it is a substitute for a companion.

One of my chihuahuas used to do this all the time when she was a pup. After she got older she stopped. They just like to carry things.

My 2 goldens do that too. You should get her some stuffed toys. Missy loves to carry those around.

Yes..my dog carries a toy with her constantly. Maybe try giving her a toy instead and she should stop with the bowl, but if it isn't a problem I wouldn't worry. She just loves her bowl :)

The answer is in the breed name 'Retriever'. Although they are beautiful dogs and make great house pets, Retrievers were originally hunting dogs like Labradors, Pointers, Weimeraners, Springers and Setters.
I have a Pointer/Weimeraner cross who is a working dog as well as a house dog, and he brings one of my daughters teddies whenever someone enters the house, and lies with them like a comforter. I think you're probably right, it's like a comforter for them, plus they just like to bring you things to make you happy!!! She sounds like a gorgeous dog.

She is a retriever--she has the need to carry just as bird dogs even if never trained to hunt will point --she's good to go --no problem there except when she spills her chow chow all over :-)
