Even more than 50 years after independence from almost two centuries of British rule, large scale poverty remains the most shameful blot on the face of India.
India still has the world’s largest number of poor people in a single country. Of its nearly 1 billion inhabitants, an estimated 350-400 million are below the poverty line, 75 per cent of them in the rural areas.
More than 40 per cent of the population is illiterate, with women, tribal and scheduled castes particularly affected.
It would be incorrect to say that all poverty reduction programmes have failed. The growth of the middle class (which was virtually non-existent when India became a free nation in August 1947) indicates that economic prosperity has indeed been very impressive in India, but the DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH has been very uneven.
The main causes of poverty are illiteracy, a population growth rate by far exceeding the economic growth rate for the better part of the past 50 years, protectionist policies pursued since 1947 to 1991 which prevented large amounts of foreign investment in the country.
Poverty alleviation is expected to make better progress in the next 50 years than in the past, as a trickle-down effect of the growing middle class. Increasing stress on education, reservation of seats in government jobs and the increasing empowerment of women and the economically weaker sections of society, are also expected to contribute to the alleviation of poverty.
Eradication of poverty can only be a very long-term goal in India

Well, we've already given up about a bazillion of our jobs, to the detriment of our own citizenry. . .billions of our dollars, both as payroll and as charity go to India annually. . .
Call me crazy, but I'd say we're doing our part to help India. . .In fact, I'm at work right now wondering how long before MY job will be outsourced to India, to help reduce THEIR poverty condition.
In our country, students have to find their own way through college, true, there are grants, and loans available, but most people must either serve in the military, or take out huge loans, and spend years upon years repaying them to be allowed to go to college, and then they're extremely lucky if they can find a job in the field they're trained in once they get out. Of course, part of the reason for this is because many of our tech jobs, particularly entry level tech jobs have been outsourced to. . . India.
Yep, I'd say America has done quite a lot -- probably more than we should have to help decrease the poverty in India. High time we worried about the poverty that's going on right here in the good ole USA.
I've always found that if you help other people get what they need, you will in the process get what you need. If India needs to decrease their poverty level, perhaps they should develop a product that the rest of the world needs, and focus for a while on helping others get what THEY need. Generally that's a good way to develop commerce. Develop a product that fills a genuine need, and sell it to those that need it. It's called productivity. As far as I know, it is the preferred method of reducing poverty.

India gives education to all it's people and yet 1/2 of India is poor as dirt. Socialism & mass bureaucracy in India still causes poverty & poverty helps cause terrorism & giving socialist educations to the poor gives you smart terrorists. Capitalism is the only way to stop terrorism, in the long run, as I'm sure every successful Indian professional/business person would tell you. Get rid of all socialism/bureaucracy in India & teach Capitalism to Everyone & you'll reduce terror to almost nothing.

How to define proverty?? Is it lack of food / shelter / clothing / health facilities or something more?
In general view yes if these four are met then the battle is won. The world has enough food to feed the entire globe 3 times over or even more. Then why is there hunger? This is how the money runs.
The FCI godowns has millions of tonnes of grains which are rotting and eaten by rats. Black marketers hord huge quantites to jack up prices. Crores of rupees spent by governmnet towards public distrubution / health / education are eaten up by shameless bastards before they reach the needy.
Eradicating poverty is not that difficult as its projected. We need honest public servants.

This is a simple but very important question , mostly the answer would be education and am in favour of educating people but the next one is to decreas in population, as population plays a vital role in emerging the stardom nation. make sure to reduce the population and make fare enough rules on adoption so that the equal statigy can be maintaind and followed like the other nations. Now after some years of independency there is a unique growth in our nations as it is stepping forward in all the aspects and at this time it is very important to maintain our population so that we can maintain eual number of jobs for them and there after equal number of remuniration for them. If planning starts from at this very stage then it would be controable and maintaind like other foreign nations , but if not then we would be worst then the developed country like China. So I belive reduction in population as well as killing of curroption..... JAI BHARAT

we can give free education 2 uneducated children as children r the future citizens of any country. there should be more job oppurtunities so as poor people dont indulge in curropt practices.
seperation of classes must not be made in the field of education & the seats should be given 2 anybody who holds a good rank, so that even they get an urge 2 try &get equal marks 2 compete.
proper funds and loans must be sanctioned 2 these poor people.

The answer is in truly educating the masses.
And you have answered it.
But in reality this is not absolutely true . Lots of very well educated people are very poor and lots uneducated are every rich also, but relatively few in number.
It is mainly the matter of 'Individual's Drive' also, luck may play some roll but guts, sweat and hard work by individual is the key to all.

Poverty is one of barrier in development of India.Causes of poverty are:-
1)Unemployement
2)Low income.
3)Incapability
4)Lack of awareness and knowledge.
Poverty can be decreased by giving employement to those who are needful. The root cause of poverty is uneducation. If one is uneducated then he will not be aware of various policies and schemes for his betterment. He will be fooled and cheated. He will neither get a job nor have any income.Even if he gets a job he would get low wage. Poor people need encouragement, motivationand guidence. If they are guided wellpoverty definately can be decreased. As Kiran Bedi says "If you look to do something, it is always possible."

India will never end poverty unless the psychopathic hoarding of wealth in this world ends. example: Home depot fires CEO with 250mil Sevres, plus 60 mil salary. Plus way to many people to divide the wealth. What is the AIDS rate up tp now? 1-10?
