Been diagnosed with full kidney failure, but I still produce urine. The doctor said we are calling it full even though you still have 20% left of your kidneys. Doesn't make much sense to me

The kidneys remove more than just water they also control the balance of important nutrients - like phosphorus and potassium.

Starting dialysis while you still produce urine will make the process easier on your body. Some forms of dialysis help maintain this residual function. Peritoneal dialysis has been shown to preserve kidney function better than three time a week in-center dialysis. It may also be true that higher doses of hemodialysis will also help preserve function e.g getting more than three treatments a week.

Protect your remaining kidney function by going on dialysis sooner rather than later. Don't wait unitl you get sicker.

Your kidneys still function and produce some urine but not enough to filter all the bad components from your urine. The dialysis does that for you. 20% of kidney function is not enough to help do all the filtering for your body. Hopefully the condition is temporary for you. If not I hope that you can get on the donor list.

Yes it is not unusually for people on dialysis to make some urine. Kidney failure can affect both the quantity (amount) and quality (effectiveness of filtering) of urine you make. You can still make substantial amounts of urine, but if it is very close to water it is not doing its job to get rid of excessive salts and urea (nitrogen from protein metabolism). It is the build up of salts and excess nitrogen that makes people with kidney failure get sick and die, as well as excess fluid retention.

Due to the fact that even though the filter is filtering your urine you are still recieving fluids and your blood stream picks up fluid flom your food so you still have to get rid of the excess.
