My mom has a solid mass on her thyroid that she has to get cut out and have a biopsy done on it. I read on here that most (95%) of sold mass on the thyroid is benign. The doctor told her that the mass she has is big and because of the size of it, there is a possibility it is cancerous. The size is 4.8 x 3.0 x 2.4. I am really afraid for my mom going through this surgery because of her heart. Any thoughts on this would be really appreciated

Most thyroid nodules ARE benign, but there are obviously some cases of thyroid cancer. I had a friend with a nodule about the same size last year who was told it was pre-cancerous, and another that it was definitely cancer in. However, thyroid cancer, as long as it's not spreading already, is probably one of the best forms of cancer to have, because it's very contained and slow-growing. The more vascular (the more blood flow) a solid mass receives, the more likely it is that it's cancer, and tumors need increased blood flow in order to grow as large as the one your mom has. If the risks of surgery outweighed the benefits, your mom would not be going in for surgery at all, I'm sure, so don't worry too much about that. Treatment for thyroid cancer is usually an iodine restricted diet, radiation therapy, and possibly chemotherapy. I wish you and your mom the best, and I hope everything turns out alright. :)

She will soon know the answers. For me, the surgeons were all set to remove my thyroid when they did a fine needle aspiration [biopsy] and, oh by the way, it was Lymphoma. I had a tumor wrapped around my neck that was mistaken for thyroid problems. The only way they found out was the biopsy. Blood tests were inconclusive. Now, that was only ME. Your Mom's doctors will tell you what is specific to HER. Please do your best not to worry [at least in front of her]. They will consider her heart condition no matter which way it goes from here.
Best wishes
