I acquired the piece from my late Grandmothers estate and cannot find any information about the artist from Ask or Google. I did find a similar piece selling for $150.00, but there was no information available about the artist.

Once again think about it. A visual medium requires a picture. spend the money and have it appraised. Don't fool with it in any way until you receive an appraisal. There are specialist artists directories and local art association directories. He may have a regional association. Did he seem to live around your GM judging by the subject. If a landscape, does it local or foreign. Is it a fairly recent painting or is it appear to be older than your GM. Business directories for the communities around may list this man.

The William J. Whiteside I know of was a rear admiral on Ike's staff. Any family connections with the Navy. He may have taken up painting like Ike and Churchill did.

William Whiteside has an art gallery in Cashiers, NC. He was an art instructor as well. Very fine work. My dad took classes from him.
