When, you ask, will adults get it ? NEVER! it's always the way they were raised or it's the parents fault or someones fault, never the dogs. As I've said before, the pit that tore me up I'd known since birth. Watched how they were raised. Was friends with the dog for 5 years. Took it for rides in my car.It sat on my lap. It one evening tore into my leg as soon as I put my hand on the doorknob to leave. They are unpredictable! And the answer where the person says maybe the little girl stepped on the dogs foot, unbelievable. And killing would be a proper response? I have stepped on many, many feet over the years and have never had a dog attack me. It's this type of mentality that keeps getting people killed. And what would be the purpose of continuing to argue who's fault it is everytime someone loses their life to a pit.It happens way too often. It's more important to some people in this sadistic world to feel mighty and right than to say maybe I'm wrong, maybe they are dangerous. To me "maybe" is enough to err on the side of safety , to "maybe" save a life and get rid of every single one of the untrustworthy, evil things.

In A Lot Of Ways.....Pitbulls Are Not Family Oriented Animals. But What Is The Whole Story And What Kind Of Background Did The Pit Come From. Dogs Maul People Because Of What Their Owners Or Humans Have Done To Them. They Are Not Vicious By Nature. Pits Have Recieved A Bad Wrap Because Of How Strong Their Jaw Muscles Are And Their Ability To Hang On. The Only Reason They Have Been In The Spotlight Is Because PEOPLE Have Taken Advantage Of This And Used Them As Fighting Animals. In All Of My Interactions With Pits.....They Have Been Loving And Nurturing By Nature. It All Depends On How They Are Raised. As For How Long It Will Take...Who Knows...But Hopefully Soon. I Just Hate The Fact That This Dog Will Now Be Put Down Because Of What The Owners Of The Pet Overlooked And Probably Wont Assume Responsiblity For. The Dog Once Again Will Be Made To Look Like The Distempered, Malicious Dog That Everybody Already Thinks That They Are!!!

In my animal shelter work experience, any dog of any breed or mix can be aggressive. Some are born that way- I have seen vicious 6 week old pups- and some are taught aggression, or simply not taught anything at all, so they make the decision to be aggressive because they do not have a responsible master.
"BSL" or Breed Specific Legislation punishes the wrong end of the leash..
I agree that owners whose dog's kill or maul should be held responsible and charged with assault or manslaughter whichever the case.
And yes, a 10 yr old should not be allowed to walk a dog alone, even if her dog is a 'sweetie', there are many nasty humans out there who would love to prey on an innocent 10 yr old-- too many dangers out there for a 10yr old.
Very sad story, and even sadder isthe fact that it is not the first and not the last.. until our governments wake up and impose stricter laws for pet owners.
Don't ban the breed, ban the deed.

That is sad but all types of dog's kills kid's and harm adults as a dog lover, owner of a pit bull people make these dog act the way they do . The only thing a dog understand is LOVE, they need to stop the inner breeding of these animals that is the reason some of the pit bull are mean.

*sigh* WHY do people actually think it's just pit bulls that kill and WHY does no one stop to think about what provoked the dog or what is the dog's past to cause this behavior? It's so much easier to just blame the animal isn't it instead of a human actually taking responsibility? Pit bulls are not bad dogs by nature, they can be great dogs. Only problem is, way too many people get dogs and know very little about them and how to raise them properly. Therefore causing temperament problems in the animal then when things go wrong, they simply say the animal was a bad breed. Bullsh*t! As sad as it is, the dog is not the only one to blame here. The parents need to be held responsible for what happened as well.
Look at this chart on the study of dogs attacks. You will see, crossbreeds are more likely to attack than pit bulls:
http://www.dlg.nsw.gov.au/Files/Information/Compare.pdf
People need to educate themselves not only on how to raise a dog but how to behave around it. Animals need to be respected and sadly, few people actually acknowledge that. Animals don't attack for *no reason* - they attack because they feel threatened. Human ignorance is the main cause of attacks. Believe it or not, do research!

Dogs, for the most part, are easily trainable to enhance or deny their basic instincts. True, the instincts will always be there and some breeds have a lower trigger point to revert back to those instincts, pit bulls for 1 example, but it's almost always the owners aggression training that causes these tragedies. It's our responsibility to raise up our children and our pets correctly or suffer from our mistakes.

It's a shame. American Pit Bull Terriers are such WONDERFUL dogs when responsibly bred and owned.
People should really research the BREED and the BREEDER before buying any dog. They should also know how to train and responsibly own a dog themselves... I can imagine with a 10-year-old girl she probably didn't know how to read the dogs body language, there was a "miscommunication" and she was hurt... Well, apparently killed in this case.
I guess her parents will really learn their lesson with this one. Be responsible. Get your dog from a good breeder and train it properly. Pit bulls don't deserve the reputation they have.
BTW, for those of you who think pit bulls are bad because they were bred to be fighting dogs. Back in the "old days" when dog fighting was legal... Pit bulls and other breeds were bred to have DOG aggresion!!!! NOT be aggressive towards people. With the fighting dogs, any dog that showed aggression towards its owner or another person was killed. They were not bred to attack people.... Just other dogs.

Nothing is as sad as a child losing her life because of anything, never mind something as horrible as a dog attack. And I just love the people here who try to look at this from the dog's point of view. One member said that all dogs want is love and that is all they need. He probable does not realize that too much love is what caused that horrible death. DOGS NEED RESPECT. THEY NEED TO RESPECT THEIR PACK LEADERS, NOT LOVE THEM. And it also highlights another point that I made here a long time ago. Getting dogs from the shelter. Now before anyone here gets all upset, I understand that you are trying to save a life and all that, but, what do you know about that dog whose life you just saved? How can you put it into a home with children without knowing anything about it, just because it passed some wannabe temperament test. NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS WOULD I BE ABLE TO DO THAT AND GO TO SLEEP AT NIGHT. To have a child die because I placed a dog and saved its life. I will give up dogs today, forever. As far as pit bulls go, I don't know what else to say here that I have not said a million times before. WE ALL NEED HELP AS A SPECIES.

Pit bulls are not natural killers. Someone has taught them to be that way. AND its not only pits that have killed....there are cases with almost every breed of dog. Pits have became famous here lately. They are used in dog fights.
Again this is how people raise them.
Also a 10 year old girl shouldn't be out walking a dog by herself.
Dogs also react. Who says the girl didn't accidentally step on his paw and he reacted? This isn't uncommon.
A number of things have to be considered on this one!
