* All three can provide psychotherapy ("therapy")

* A psychiatrist has gone to medical school and is able to prescribe medications. Although most psychiatrists are trained to provide psychotherapy, it is becoming less common for a psychiatrist to do so.

* A psychologist has completed a doctoral degree in psychology. This is typically either a PhD or a PsyD. The PhD degree trains psychologists in the skills needed to provide psychotherapy and in the skills needed to do research to advance the field. The PsyD degree trains psychologists to provide psychotherapy and places less of a focus on the development of research skills. Both degrees take about 4-6 years to complete, after having graduated from college. Both PhD and PsyD psychologists are referred to as doctors. In some states (New Mexico and Louisiana), a PhD-level psychologist is also able to prescribe medications.

A counselor usually has a masters degree in psychology or social work. They can also be trained to provide psychotherapy. As far as I know, all states provide licensure for social workers, but a number of states do not allow those with a masters degree in psychology to be licensed (meaning that they cannot be reimbursed by insurance companies and clients will have to pay out-of-pocket). Some states allow one to be licensed if they have a degree in professional counseling, which is often 1 year longer than the typical masters programs (which are ordinarily completed in 2 years).

I have an Associate's Degree in Social Services, I can be a Counselor. A Psychologist has gone to school for a certain number of years after that, he is way beyond a Counselor. And a Psychiatrist went to school even more years, and he is the only one out of them all that can prescribe meds.

A counselor and psychologist are almost the same except a psychologist has a degree. A psychiatrist is an actual Dr and can dispense medication.

A psychiatrist has a doctor's degree and can prescribe med and a psychologist can't. As for a counselor they are probably just there to hear and help find solutions to your problems.

A counselor is someone usually with a masters degree who people go to to talk about their problems...If it seems there is more going on they may refer you to a psychologist who dive a little deeper into peoples depressions or anxieties..Then a psychiatrist is the only one who can actually prescribe medicine if needed...Every few years I get in a bad slump, and see a counselor who is great..Sometimes all we need is someone to talk to to help us figure out why we feel the way we do...

A counselor and a psychologist are one in the same. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that knows the drugs used in specific cases, suggests them, and can prescribe them.

The difference is the amount of formal education each has. A counsellor can practice with two to three years of schooling and are not licenced. A phychologist is a doctor but cannot write prescriptions. Finally a phychiatrist has the most schooling, he is a medical doctor with the authority to write prescriptions. The cost for the services is directly associated with the amount of schooling it takes

Bachelors degree, master's degree, and M.D. In that order...

Actually, the way you spelled it, councillor is a member of a council. Counselor is the term you were looking for.

Plus, a psychiatrist studies diseases of the brain too, and can prescribe more meds.
