73 books. Catholic.

2007-01-15 05:58:01 · answer #1 · answered by cynical 6 · 0 1

I am a catholic and the Bible I use has 73 books in it. This is the number of books in the Bible from the beginning of the Christianity until the 1500's when 7 books (deuterocanonical) were removed.

The reason the Jewish leaders deleted the deuterocanonical booksis because these books were part of the Christian canon and not theirs. The Jewish leaders deleted the books as a condemnation of the new Christian faith. 1500 years later, the Protestant reformers did the same.

When the protestant reformers deleted the book of Maccabees, not only did they delete a book that talks about praying for the dead, but also the book in the Old Testament that speaks of the resurrection.

73 and I am Catholic. The 7 books we recognize that many protestants do not are 1&2 Maccabees, Sirach, Baruch, Wisdom,Tobit, and Judith. Some Protestants use them for history and/or spiritual teaching but call them the Apocrypha(meaning uninspired) and do not consider them scripture. The Maccabees give the story of the origins of Hannukah but is no longer recognized by Jews as scripture (because it was originally written in Greek) but i think that at one time they were regarded as scripture by Jews. I definitely accept the 66 books used by Protestants as 100% legitamate but i feel that people are missing out on some really cool stuff by not seeing the whole Bible. However, I do not believe that what people are missing would lead them to have an entirely different belief in God.

I'm a Christian. I'm pretty much non-denominational. My Bible has around 60 books, both old & new testament combined.

66 books. I have not found a denomination which is faithful to Scriptures. (and I don't feel called to start my own). So I am not a member of any denomination. We call ourselves "Believers" meaning we believe Scripture. (Though of course we don't understand all of it exactly alike)
