A few years ago, me and a friend of mine shared a bottle of sake he said he'd obtained from a friend in Japan. It tasted amazing -- not too dry and pleasantly fruity. Since that time, I've tried without any luck at finding a bottle of sake that was as tasty as this one.

I don't know the label, regrettably. But if anyone out there can tell me of a kind of sake that's better than most, it would help me a lot.

Please note that I don't want to buy any through the Internet. Just let me know of any kinds you've tried and liked that would be able to be found in a liquor store with a good selection.

If you don't have any specific recommendations, then just let me know some of the terms used on the labels and how I can select an above-average bottle of sake from a liquor store.

Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers!

Sake is pretty much my favorite kind of alcohol- and I often have the same problem (of remembering which brand I like- especially after I go to my favorite sake bar in Manhattan called Decibel). Anyway, I too was in Japan- and enjoyed sake from all over. I know I will never know which sake I drank. But- not knowing which city you live in- most metro areas in the states however, do have liquor stores getting far more savvy with sake. I would look online at different sites catering to sake drinkers- and then ask your local liquor store salesperson to order recommended sakes. You can get any kind from very dry- to sort of sweet, to even plum -infused sakes (a take on Japanese sweet plum wine that is not as sweet). Good luck! :-)

Jeff, unfortunately in our area, we don't get to be choosy with sake. The 1 or 2 bottles on the shelf is all we have to choose from.
A good rule, though, for alcohol is that the higher the price, the better it is. If you have a choice between a 30-dollar bottle and a 100-dollar bottle, it's a safe (and expensive...) assumption that the 100-dollar bottle is going to taste better.

I don't know any brands off the top of my head. I only have a suggestion. Go to an authentic Japanese restaurant and ask the server for a recommendation based on your taste. If you like it, then try going to an authentic Japanese market or Asian market in your area. There are lots of Asian markets here. The plum flavored is my favorite. Good luck to ya.

We have tried several kinds, and the one that we usually purchase and order is simply called Black Label Sake. We have been able to find it in most stores. Good luck.
