The hood on my 2000 VW Jetta is badly bent and the hood strut is destroyed, both need to be replaced. Any idea what this would cost? I have comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible. There was no accident, the hood flew up while driving. Think this will be covered?

Thanks, good answers. I'm thinking of doing this myself, can't be that hard. Anyone know of an online guide or other resource which shows how to replace a hood?

I have a 2003 Jetta GLS TDI.

You can purchase a hood, itself for under $200 if you know where to
look. That hood will NOT be painted, but it will be primed.

You can buy the paint (pint to quart) for under $100
The struts are cheap junkyard items.

You'll spend ~$500 between parts, paint, and labor (of a painter to paint it for you)

Since you have to spend the $500 anyhow, there is NO reason to report it to your insurance company, and thus risk raising your rates.

I am also replacing my hood - road rash / weather damage has left it filled with so many pock marks that it's better to replace it than repair it. Odd thing is, my fenders, quarterpanels, roof, are all PRISTINE.
