You shouldn't have to stay happy in the midst of disaster. There's absolutely no reason why one should be expected to smile and laugh when their world's falling apart around them. Maybe those who are able to be upbeat in the face of adversity have a grace that most of us will never know.

When we are born we come into this world with nothing and as we grow, we acquire things and grow in knowledge. The one thing we have that is worth much is life and the attributes that God gave us Love, Justice, Wisdom, and Power. One of the main things to remember is in the scriptures is at : James 1:12,13 The best thing a person can do is seek knowledge and get to know his creator. But if you need food you have to work. If their is no work to be had move. Remember this thought that a live dog is better off than a dead Lyon. so as long as you have breath you have hope.

Well first off you have to understand fully what that means, then it becomes easy to stay happy in the midst of all things. Don't confuse your thoughts with the thoughts and meanings of God's.

You may not be happy but you can have peace in the middle of disaster by realizing that there is a lesson to be learned. Everything has a lesson and there is opportunity to learn from even bad things.

Hope.
Not wishing, but a sure hope, based on facts.
That's what Hebrews 6:19 gives as an answer.
To have such a sure hope, one needs to know what God's will is for the earth.
Have a peak at Psalm 37:29

I have been doing that for the past 2 years, I have lost 2 family members,(3 months apart) my 21 year old niece, and my 40 year old cousin, my cousin was murdered and his murderer is still walking free.. I've endured financial problems and and health issues, and through it all, I found God holding my hand and leading me through.
even though it has been the roughest part of my life, I find I am still thankful because through the hardest parts of my life, I've grown closer to God.

We can be happy despite disasters by focusing on other things; I prefer to focus presently on obeying God, to his glory.
May you receive an unmistakable pleasant surprise today for proper use!

Trust Jesus.
Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
