Everybody is answering your question as if you're planning to get a dog instead of doing a report.
I love my mini rat terrier because he so smart, so much fun, so loving and easy to train. Here's an excellent site for info http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/ratterrier.htm.
I take my 5 month old to the nursing home several times a week and he's just great with the old people as well as the staff. He also loves my grandchildren. They're so much fun to play with and they don't outgrow their desire to play. They make great apartment dogs because they are small and it doesn't take as much space to exercise them. You can give them their exercise in a hallway by playing fetch. By the way, President Teddy Rosevelt gave them their name. I wouldn't have anything else. Hope you do a good report.

Personally, I like the German Shorthaired Pointer and I have one.

A GSP is a good sized dog (males 55-70 pounds) with very short hair. He has energy and stamina and does well with children. Not for a couch potato family, a properly exercised and trained GSP can go for miles outside or chase a tennis ball until your arm drops off, but will lay down and mellow out inside the house.

Friendly with everyone, a GSP will have normal protective instincts if someone breaks into your house and is big enough to deter people at a glance.

A "wash and wear" dog, his coat does not require a lot of grooming. Although he sheds, the size of the hairs means it makes less of a mess than many other breeds.

GSPs are very people-focused and do best when they can be with their family as much as possible.

It depends what type of dog fits into your lifestyle. I have two small dogs and they don't need alot of exercise, where as a large dog would require alot, for example you can't keep a lab confined to a small apartment with no room to roam. You have to be willing to commit to alot of time for enough exercise otherwise they get bored maybe a little destructive etc.. where as a small dog doesn't need all of that. I'm very very happy with my small dogs, but if I ever bought a house with about 1 arce of land I would love to get a big dog in addition to my small dogs.
Hope this helps.

If I could have a dog I'd adopt a Sato. These dogs are Puerto Rican street dogs who've been rescued and brought state-side. They tend to be medium to small mutts and many have some chihuahua mixed in.

Please note: This is not spam. This is a small operation my friends have worked hard to create. You can check out the site and see the dogs and find out where shelters are that adopt them out.

a retired greyhound is a great pet. they just sleep all day and work out perfectly in an apartment or small duplex -- i have one that was adopted about 6 months ago and he came already fixed, with clean teeth, short nails, and potty trained. they don't need much exercise (two or three 15 minute walks) and are very quiet. greyhounds are very loving and sweet with other dogs, children, etc. although unfortunately they are just as sweet with thieves and metermen.
most greys bred for racing never even race, so adopting these beautiful dogs just makes sense.

Small dogs are more popular because they don't need a lot of space and when so many people who want pets live in apartments, it is cruel to have a big dog around because he doesn't have the space to run around and play the way he would in a backyard. I like bigger dogs - I personally find them more playful, less likely to be paranoid and less likely to bite an unsuspecting neighbour. But then again, it all depends on how you train your dog and definitely on how you treat him.

I like big dogs. I've owned small dogs and they seem to be very needy and less independent and fussy. They will also punish you by trashing your house or using the bathroom where they are not supposed to when they feel neglected.
I like breeds that are intelligent. Golden Retrievers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are all very good breeds.
Only problem is that you can't go barefoot around them cuz if they step on your foot, OUCH!!!!!!! LOL

small dogs like the Australian Terriers are better if you live in an apartment like myself and don't wanna make too much noise. But if i had a home w/ a big backyard I would want an Irish Wolfhound.

Well, I have always loved big dogs. They have always seemed more friendly and fun, but small dogs are entertaining as well. I really think that as long as you love your dog and they love you, you'll have fun being a pet owner!

Speaking from dog experience...I have had three labs, a golden retriever, two Cairn terriers, and my big dogs have always been my favorite. My parents currently have a chocolate lab while I have just rescued a German Shepherd...and I love my big babies!

I love both - but best for you depends on your lifestyle. Small dogs work best for me - work full time, live in small place, not very active. I have a shitz-hu, I love 'em. They don't shed, mine does NOT bark - - ever and is low maintenance as long as you keep their hair in a "puppy cut" - - very loving - - not the "ankle bitters" some people claim they are! ~
