You are not an Agnostic, you are a deist (you believe in a god). Atheists don't believe the world came about by chance, we believe it came about by adhering to the laws of physics.

I'm with you. I used to get angry with John Lennon with his lyrics about the world being better with no religion. I'm sure he meant organized religion. I don't know how anyone can have such blinkers on that they can't see that the world would be a better place without people thinking that their particular religious belief is the only way to salvation. You are not a big chicken at all. Atheism is another form of egotism on the part of the individual. Study history in the most superficial way and you can see that many beliefs of the past seem ridiculous now, but people believed them strongly enough to burn others at the stake, or some other diabolical method. Keep an open mind. You don't know if there is a higher power but your instincts tell you there must be. That is good enough, and I'm pleased to know that there is at least one person that won't be committing an act of terrorism or thrusting his brand of religion down my throat.

You are one hundred percent right: Religion, control of the many by the few". You have questioned organized religion, and have come to the logical conclusion that religion is an accepted, even encouraged mania.
Agnostics admit the nature of the unknowable, and hope that life is not happening by chance only, that there is reason and purpose behind it all.

Agnosticism is not about belief, that is theism or atheism. Agnosticism is about knowledge. There is no way that anyone could know with 100% certainty that god(s) or the supernatural exist -- neither side has been proven; therefore, we are actually all agnostics, whether we choose to acknowledge it or not. Atheism and theism come in after that, where you identify whether or not you believe in the existence of god(s) and the supernatural. If you do, then you're an agnostic theist. If not, you're an agnostic atheist.

I'm also an atheist.
Agnostic means I don't think it's possible to know that god exists or doesn't, during this life.
Atheist means I hold no belief in a god or gods.
Your beliefs are your own. I wish you well with them.

I believe is a powerful statement and then you try to discredit your self with "I may be a chicken". Everyone believes something and their beliefs, whether they are true or not, are what people base their "life choices" on that everyone gets to make during their lifetime.
Since you have recognized that the cosmos and all life in it are orderly and organized with the harmony and balance that exist without interference from man, the "concept" of a designer, higher power or creator come into reality as a "truth assumption" that to you has not been verified as a truth that is unchanging due to new knowledge, information, social acceptance and the current political environment. However, the truth of your own eyes lead you to "believe" that there is Something out there that is in control and started the beginning and existence of all life.
Religion is mans attempt to define God based on the very observations that you have made on your own. The reason for this is because the reality of the handiwork of a "Creator" is all around us, wherever we are. The good news is two-fold for you today. First you are right about religion. Second the question that you have about God is able to be answered for you in real and tangible ways by God Himself.
God, the Creator of the cosmos and all life in it has revealed Himself to man so that we, individually, can know Him one on one, not just to know "about" Him through the revelation we have of Him because of the evidence of His handiwork and what we learn of His workings through our growing knowledge of science. We know that God has reached out to man in another way because of the bible. In the bible God claims that even though the bible is written by men, God Himself is the author. This means that even if we do not understand it completely or only in part we can make some "truth assumptions" about God and what He is saying because one of the primary truth claims that God makes in the bible is that 1) His word is true and 2) that His word being true does not ever change. It is as true today as when it was originally said and written. It does not change due to outside influences or circumstances. If we accept this then it comes down to the matter of "do we believe the word of the God that we say we believe in" or not? Another vital truth claim in the bible is this; God says that if we will seek Him with all that we are, all of our heart, mind, body and soul that God will reveal Himself to us. This does not mean that if you believe that God is real He will show himself to you. This means that whether you believe that God is real or not, if you will search Him out, seeking only the truth, that God will reveal Himself to you. This is not about religion at all. This is about having a personal relationship, one on one, with the Living God, the Creator of the universe and all life in including yours.
Since this is a relationship issue and God has said that He is available and willing to have a personal relationship with each of us. All that choose to accept that God is who He says He is and we are willing to accept the path to Him that He has made available to all mankind that is freely given and offered to all without reservation, qualification, condition or prejudice the choice is now ours to make. God has turned the choice of knowing Him over to man, for each of us to choose to turn to God or to turn away from God and deny Him. What is so awesome about the choice is that because God offers the tangible reality of a personal one on one relationship we are able to discern whether this is a truth and really God or not. It no longer is dependent on a belief system, concept or idea or "religious" truth claim. We are not having to "believe " that we are right in our concept of God because now we know that we can go directly to the source for our question about the reality of God. How much better could it be, all we have to do is be sincere in the desire of our heart to search out God, thats it, God says He will do everything else. That brings you to this question, do you want to find out if God is really real or are you satisfied with not knowing for sure if He is or not? If you really want to know the answer then your quest as a "seeker of truth" has begun. There is no time limit and it is truly an adventure, I recommend that you enjoy the journey as well as finding out the answer.
