hi! i have final exam tomorrow and i have some problem i checked the dictionary believe me but i did not find. would you please tell me what sound these words i mean /iz/ or/s/or/z/?these are the words:pens/mats/maps/schools/teachers/teaches/tapes/places/finishes/writes/foes/keeps/uses/dishes/roofs/coughs/works.another question is: where is the stress in these words?these are the words:before/after/city/little/added/enough/believe/result/about/garden/hello/eleven.thanks alot i kiss your hand. good luck!

In the word "pens"; it is only 1 syllable. The ending sounds like a "z".
In "mats"; same thing...only 1 syllable. The ending sounds like the letter "s".
"Maps"; 1 syllable; ending sounds like "s".
"Schools", same thing; only 1 syllable. Ending sounds like the letter "z".
The stress in each word can only be placed in 1 location, because they are all only 1 syllable.
Next set of words...
"Be-FORE". Emphasis on 2nd syllable.
"AF-ter", emphasis on 1st syllable.
"CI-ty"; emphasis on 1st syllable.
"LI-ttle"; emphasis on 1st syllable.

Ok. why don't you try a pronunciation dictionary? For instance, by J.C Wells.Longman Edit. Anyway, in any monolingual dictionary you will find the pronunciation.
pens: like /z/ penz
mats: like /s/
maps: like /s/
schools:like /z/

A linguistic book will help, it's no dictionary and you can buy them cheap.
