Inhalers are not always the best idea to use. Once you stop smoking, it takes about 7-10 days to get the nicotine out of your system. It will take about 6 months to a year to get your lungs to working and functioning again.
Don't get upset, take your time and realize that it took years of smoking to cause the damage, and will take time to correct it as best your body can.
Side note, for each year you smoked, it increases your chances of Emphysema later in life, even though you stopped smoking.

The people who told you will feel better in a while are right, it will take a while for your lungs to regenerate and return to proper function, although they will never completely repair themselves. Really all you can do is keep at your doctor to give you an inhaler, but I doubt he/she'll give you one, its something that will just take time!

How long it takes to remove the side effects depends on how heavy your additction was and how long you have been smoking for. The longer you have smoked, the more damage you do, the longer it takes to repair.
